I purchased one of these at a gun show last year. The crest had been ground off. All numbers match on the rifle on everything including the barrel bands. The bore is pristine looks like almost never fired. I was always wondering why this was done. I have read the answers here and am still perplexed. Any ideas other than what is here. Sure is a nice K98. Has only mod 98 on the receiver. Thanks for your helpl

I agree with kenb, it's a Czech crest with the rampant lion. The Yugoslavian "Tito" crest is usually stamped higher up on the receiver ring, and doesn't extend that low. I think the remaining portion of the crest is the leg or knee of the standing lion (one leg is kicked out in front of the other). Perhaps the Yugos got their hands on some early post-WWII Czech built K98s.....like the ones that Samco was selling with the big trigger guard. Some of those had rampant...

Ahh, I got you now. And you weren't necessarily vague, it could have been the density between my ears.

You're also right in that it's great that these knowledgeable folks are so willing to freely share the fruits of their hard work. It doesn't hurt one bit to contact them once in a while and tell them so either! In talking to one publisher, he commented that they never fail to...

nug, didn't mean to be vague, I was just following up on your comment about Branko. Goose52 ran a survey forever on the FN49s and has compiled a book on it. I think it is great to be able to reach guys of their calibre for even the simplest of questions.

rlarson13, I wouldn't find a czech crest all that surprising being pressed into yugoslav service. The germans used oodles of czech weaponry in WWII and to think this one could have fallen into yugo hands is a real possibility. Too bad it is not intact as that is a super cool piece. I wish I had bought all the yugo mausers and SKSs I saw at gunshows with all the stock carving and such. Just a few short years ago they could not give such rifles away around my neck of the...

It wouldn't be Iraqi. That's a triangular crest. Sryian crest maybe. It's quite intricate.

We're very lucky to have Branko. As far as I know, ours is the only such forum he follows. And he didn't just go away as soon as his book was published as some authors have. He has also shared a lot of stuff not in the book too. Very generous that. He has put into public domain much he could control under copyright.

Struck out with finding the original owner. Like so many surplus arms, it traces back to a bargain bin at an unnamed gun store, so no luv. Haven't been able to find a Syrian crest to compare it to but the blue book of gun values, 28^th edition has several crests. The only one that looks anything like it is close...

Have at it. I'm tracing back the original owner (at least on this side of atlantic) to see if he can give some more details when he bought it. Only crest I could find that looked like it might fit was the the chec lion crest but I couldn't find a detailed enough copy to layover.

Branko agrees with us. Apparently he looked in because he attached this comment in an email about something else we were discussing...
"You say with good reason : 'that trace of a stamp doesn't look to me like any part of a Yugo crest'."

Unfortunately, he had no suggestion as what it could be.

I also was thinking that the remnants of the crest do not look Yugo. It is definitely an interesting piece though. I wonder if whatever was being done was not completed though since it was left in the white. Just wondering aloud

I was thinking the same thing. the remaining doesn't match any of the yugo crests I've seen. My Branko book is still in the mail so I can't be sure. Has anyone bought one of the 24/47's from centerfire and does it look similar. If it was just one person or small group, I would think they would have done a better job.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. search only brough up the ground off german crest and my google searches were also bust. I new to the forum and just picked up a yugo referb 98K with most of the markings but the Yugo crest was ground off the top of the action. Any idea on why or just my luck. Thanks in advance. Rich
