Hello,

I'd like to do some stock work on the subject rifle, It is dry, but very dark in color. What would the original finsh have been like? Since I'm not
trying to remove cosmoline, should I start with a finish stripper? Then what? Information here is great, but varies widely. I just want to get started
correctly and make the stock look close to original.

Thanks in Advance, Al

Thanks again Rome,
Spent a couple of hours tonight first with 409, then with Acetone. WOW, what an improvement!!!! Found the matching S/N stamped into the bottom of stock. Found
a #12 stamped on top of stock rail where the bolt release would be. Just a major improvement and just what I was looking for without removing any wood.

I need to find some BLO or Tung oil now. Can't wait to get it applied. That will be a project for the weekend. Does Home Depot or Lowe's...

Anything that is "embedded" into the stock I normally leave. Things like cross bolts tend to tear out since they are recessed. Since you're not
being agressive with the cleaning, just leave 'em. Also make sure not to rub off any finish, however. Steel wool can do that.

AL, that stock looks like a typical K98 stock that has see alot of action and handling. There does not appear to be any cosmo contamination, fortunately, but
it would stand for a good cleaning.

A lot of the really "dark" color in stocks like this is due to the grunge that's accumulated over many decades. That grunge can be
"legally" removed without harming the stock or the remaining finish. There are two types of grunge on that wood: stuff that can be...

As you can see, this is a well worn stock. It's not laminated, so I believe it walnut? To me it doesn't appear to be loaded with cosmoline. Since this
was a vet bring back, not RC, I don't think it was protected with cosmo for long term storage at any time.
K98s have oiled finishes. That being said, there is no one "right" look for a main battle rifle like the K98s. Their colors run the gamut from
blonde to very dark. It really depends on the type of stock lumber it is, what history it's seen, and even if it's laminated or solid wood. The best
thing for us to do here would be to see some photos. Can you post a couple up,...
