I think I'm dreaming...I just came home with a 1894 M91 made at the French arsenal. The stock has the usual scratches and dings...I can see a large S on
the right side of the butt and possibly some numbers below it but they are very faint. On the left side of the receiver there are the two letters
"JH". They are the only markings I can't identify...anyone have an idea what they indicate? Pictures not available at this time, sorry.

   I've had M91s dated 1899 and 1905 so...
The JH mark, as Radom suggests, is the steel provider, a company called Jacob Holtzer.

Please look at the thread I linked here and tell me if your rifle has a circle-C mark on the front top of the rear sight base, and if so, is the left side
marked and lined out?

Please post on the thread...

Chatellerault m91 is a biggie! In any shape, but especially with all markings intact. Pics of several "Finned"mosin triggers here: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinFeatures03.htm If memory serves (HA!) the JM marking is that of a
subcontractor, I believe that made the barrel. Or, was is just the steel provider? There are several different markings that may be in that location.

Great find!

I'm curious what you mean by 'Finned trigger'. What did they do, you mean like the extra spring on some CG guns, or the extra pin on M39 triggers?

zee -- I think the JH is something else, have seen it discussed before but can't remember. Not Finn though, if I remember right.

Great Find! The large S on the stock is the old Finnish Civil Guard number and if referenced and readable will tell you at least where the stock served in
Finland. JH I think is the Finnish armorer (person) who approved it for service. I have that on one of my Chatelleraults along with about a 5 inch counter bore
too! Is that one counter bored? Even with the large counter bore after a bunch of hot cleaning and gentle care she gives a passable account of herself shooting
at the range. Very...

I forgot to mention it was a Finn capture...trigger has been "finned" and the rear sight also has the metric scale marked on the right side. One
mark I noticed today was the R on the bolt body indicating Remington manufacture. I shot it today and had great results with tight groupings out at 50
yards.Soooo kewl shooting a 115 year old piece of history. I had my M38 with me also...nothing like the sound of those carbines, and also the accompanying
fireball on a overcast day.
