It must be a calvary carbine according to how you decribed it. There were only 10,000 of the Engineers Carbines ever manufactured, whereas there were 24,000 of the Cavalry Carbines made, both by DWM. (Many more 1909 Cavalry Carbines were made in the 1940's by FMAP in Argentina) Is the crest still present, or is it scrubbed?
