Personally, I think the White House was testing the waters to see if everyone was comatose. I don't think it was a case of "throwing a bone" to BHO's radical left base, the wide ranging Dept of Defense cuts achieved that.

I also agree with Jackbull that Shinseki has a bone to pick with the military community. Shinseki will keep himself occupied as one of BHO's "experts" until old Daniel Inouye (D, Hawaii) dies or retires and he gets that Senate seat...

Back to the issue at hand, I am positive Rahm Emanuel is way to savy to allow Barry O. to go to far with the Ponzi scheme which has wounded Vets paying for their treatment with private insurance. It was probably just a tasty tidbit for his rabid leftwing support to nurse on, and it did have "Beret Boy" Shenseki's support (he is still mad about being run off).

Hey,at least you're not one of them Vietnam Veterans....now EVERYBODY hated them. I remember when the media seemed to start every story with "Today a Vietnam Veteran held police at bay......and on a related story another Vietnam Vet was seen jay walking on Main street, law abiding citizens were confused about where to walk to avoid him...and finally tonight a search is on for a robbery suspect...... witnesses describe him as an unkept, sullen looking man, wearing a field jacket ,...

Ok, ok....we have shifted gears and now the topic is the secret Dept of Homeland Security report about homegrown subversives. Janet "Reno" Napolitano mustn't like me since I'm a returned Iraq war veteran, pro-life, anti-illegal immigration, anti-big government, and a pro-2nd Amendment NRA member. What are you guys talking about?? I was discussing the stillborn White House plan to move the responsibility for veterans' service related medical treatment from the VA to commercial insurance providers. What does McVeigh, Whitman and LHO have to do with that?

I've read the report and i don't believe it does anything near what has been speculated here.It simply points out that disgruntled combat Veterans may pose a risk considering their combat skills. Remember Lee Harvey Oswald?(ex-Marine) Chapman(ex-marine Texas Tower shooter)...and how bout Timothy McVeigh?(ex-Army Okla city)
Sounds like due vigilence to me.

It seems as though the new plan is to designate most of us combat veterans as "terrorist" which will drop us from the rolls of VA elligible. This should make the miniscule budget they will have to work with go much farther.

It's clear with your forecasts of doom and gloom, you would be happy if he proved you right. I understand your frustration, Vet issues have been under attack for the last 8 years.I prefer to give the man a chance.Negativity helps no one. My paychecks have already been bigger with the stimulous pkg, as has most other Americans.....i would suppose all the naysayers will be refunding this money?

What makes you think Obama wanted an open debate on his "you vets can have your privately purchased health insurance pay for your service related disabilities" VA plan??? Originally the mainstream media didn't want to touch this topic with a ten foot pole. This plan was leaked to certain blogsites, Drudge got a hold of it, then CNN let the cat out of the bag. This plan was developed with zero input from the AL, VFW, or DAV.

row render a very insufficient budget for the VA.

Talk is very inexpensive inside the beltway, lets not start counting on these McBillions until the Authorization Bill is printed 16...

If the criticisms don't come from other Vets how do you explain the majority of Veterans voting for a candidate that had a terrible voting record on Vet issues...my statement stands.
After the last 8 years i think some of us have forgotten how the system SHOULD work, it wasn't a "scheme" and it was not being conducted in the dark....The President had a proposal , invited several Vet groups and VA officials to discuss it and after listening to them decided against...

Some of us support veterans benefits regardless of who is president. I remember discussions on this forum about backdoor attempts to jack up retiree Tricare premiums, and VA schemes to re-evaluate all PTSD disabilities.....and that was when the other guy was president. Most of the criticisms about vets getting care DO NOT come from other vets ---- they come from beancounters within the VA bureacracy, and conniving politicians that prefer that tax dollars go to their pet porkbarrel projects...

VA care is based on a priority system.You are assigned a priority number according to your circumstances. Service connected is at the top....currently i am in the highest bracket #8.I have a co-pay based on my income.During the last administrations tour of duty the priority 8 group was cut out. I was already in the system or i would be too. As a result we have Vets who have about $33,000 household income a year who can't afford a private health insurance policy sitting in line with...

Here's an update on this issue. Two days after the president and his VA advisors met with the commander of the American Legion the White House issued a press release stating that the planned changes were withdrawn from consideration by the US Congress. In other words, this scheme is dead....for the time being.

I am retired Army, for my wife and I, Tricare Prime is, $460.00 a year, that is Medical no Dental. My dental problems were incurred on Active Duty and documented in my Dental Record (which is in my hands) and the VA is working on me for free.

VA care is based on a "Service connected" test that varies widely from locale to locale, or indigence. Combat wounded Veterans should be at the top of the list in my book, they mostly are from what I have seen. The guy who hurt...

Skeyed, the VA will only fix your teeth if they were damaged in a service related injury, or if you are a pauper with absolutely no way of paying. The VA does dental work, but the fees are comparable to what regular dentists charge. I know a vet who is poor but not destitute, and the VA wanted him to pay $175 to extract a rotted molar. This was at the Louisville KY VA hospital. Remember the key phrase is "service related injury or condition".

I found this article on the CNN website and I want to pass this info on to all military veterans. The Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric Shinseki, confirmed yesterday that the Obama Administration has drawn up a plan that will require veterans to pay for service related treatment at VA hospitals with private insurance. The administration has not formally presented the plan to the Congress, but it has been leaked to veterans organizations, who have notified lawmakers. Here is a link...
