Hey all--

I have a son, 25, who is 13 years post-trauma; he suffered a significant TBI (traumatic brain injury) at age 12. His road back has been a long, strange
experience. The net effect: a missed adolescence, some memory problems, a little loss of vision in his left peripheral field. (Heck, he was actually blinded by
the injury but fought back.) Now, John is a big old dude who's just getting by like everyone else (with some help from his folks).

He's never expressed a strong...

As a physician and a shooting enthusiatst I am pleased but not surprised to hear the good news that the 'shooting therapy' is helpful. You are also
right, .22 is the cat's meow. I shoot more .22 than everything else put together.

I have several patients who have become friends/shooting buddies of mine that I take to the range regularly. One has MS and is in a wheelchair. Another has had

target shooting was considered an optimal rehabilitative therapy for Brain Injury patients ( Trauma, Strokes and Birth Defects, such as cerebral palsy).

When I was just a teenage shooter, I remember a man in his sixties, who was badly handicapped by Polio as a child (in the 1930s), who regularly came shooting

It was a good experience. The boy told me he aims & shoots with both eyes open--wow--he's right handed and told me he makes the sight picture with his
right eye, but the left eye remains open. Is he on to something-? Do other shooters use this method-? I tried it and went right back to the squint-eye method.

Well--I took my son to the range today and it was a great success. We have a small pistol-only indoor range nearby who allows rim fire rifles. I took the 10-22
and my reliable old Mk1 Ruger. We started out at about 10 yds to get John accustomed to the rifle. Within three clips, he was staying inside a circle of about
7 inches or so, and found the bullseye a few times as well. We moved the target down to 15 yds and eventually to the last position at around 75 ft. The cool
thing was to see John...

A couple of months ago Field & Stream ran an article about four partially disabled young veterans. Magnificent young men who reclaimed their love of

I think it would be wonderful therapy for him! Just make sure he wears a set of ear plugs under muffs at the range and watch him. When he starts bringing home
targets with the X ring shot out of them for bragging rights, you know your job is done. As he progresses, you can introduce him to larger center-fire caliber
rifles and he could become a very good marksman. Regardless, it is very cheap therapy no matter how you look at it.
