Hello.....

I have a 1925 Izzy 91/30 (ex Dragoon) that has an issue with the bolt. Without a round it's easy to close but I have to really horse it to close when I
chamber a round. I've visually inspected the chamber and bolt lug races and it's all very clean. I've run about a hundred rounds through it and it
has no issues extracting but I have to really force it to get it to open. The serial number on the bolt matches the barrel but was probably renumbered when it
was...

Ed.... No crud on the bolt or ejector..... I got the rifle hand picked from Classic about a year back and it came to me clean with no cosmo. Looked as it was
refurbed, liberally swabed with shellac, packed up and never issued. No cosmo soaked into the wood (stock was new, has a Ukraine refurb cartouch) which was a
plus but plenty of shellac on the metal parts which was easily cleaned.

I looked at the extractor under magnification and it seems new as it shows none of the wear...

To be honest with you guys, I have to admit having the same problem about fifteen years ago when the Mosin Nagants started showing up in quantity in this
country. It was a 1934 Tula Hex and I was about to take it back to Big 5, where I bought it. But that would entail a hundred mile round trip, so I simply
looked over things and the extractor being out of place actually stood out like a sore thumb to me. It was full of dried grease, cosmoline, and dirt under it.
Took some mighty powerful...

Glad that I was able to help someone out with a problem. Most people would simply replace the bolt head along with the extractor, but then you would need to
headspace the rifle. If I can fix what is there, and original to the rifle, that is the course of action I always take. I am NOT a gun smith or machinest. Just
stuff I have learned on my own after playing around with milsurp rifles for well over 45 years now.

m1 talker...... Your post got me thinking.... I took all three of my Mosin bolts out and compared the profile of the extractor with a cartridge inserted in the
bolt face. The extractor on my problem bolt extended past the outside radius of the bolt. The others did not and would chamber rounds without issue in the
rifle in question.

With a spent piece of brass inserted in the bolt I carefully filed and stoned the outside face of the extractor until it was flush with the outside of...

Thanks for the replies......
Renfield54; the chamber is smooth... spent shells get extracted properly and the cases look fine after firing. It's just difficult to close or open the
bolt with a round in the chamber.

gaweidert; I have two other Mosins..... I'll try what you suggest and see if it makes a difference. Do I need to worry about headspace issues if I fire it
with a bolt from a different Mosin?

I would check the extractor over carefully and make sure it does not have a bunch of crud under it. These sort of problems are usually related to the extractor
being either dirty or bent or out of position on the bolt head.

I have an M91 with the same issue. I got it out of a fixer upper bin a few years ago. Try this:

1) Remove the bolt form the rifle.
2) Attach a round to the front of the bolt.
3) Reinsert the bolt and see if it now closes properly.

That is how mine worked. I tried just about everything the experts on the board suggested with no success. I eventually found a bolt form one of my other
MN's that worked fine. It is the only bolt that works properly in this rifle....

Are there any visible scratches showing on the cases when they come out of the chamber? Could be a burr on the inside of the chamber walls itself.....if
that's the case, it'll have to be carefully buffed out just enough to make for smooth closing on the case when loaded.....
