My 1915 Amberg did had a spot for a unit disk, but no bolt take down. The top hand guard was missing, but a k98 from Numrich fits, and only a GEW expert would
tell the difference. I paid $100 for mine 2-3 years ago at a gunshop where it was under consignment. When I first showed pictures of it online I had multiple
offers in the $400 range even tho I was told I "destroyed" the rifle by removing the rust (not patina, rust) from the receiver with a cleaner from
work (not naval jelly,...

Thanks for the information. I suspected that it was a refinish but I wasn't sure if it was the original stock because of the finger-groove. The fact that
there is no visible evidence that it ever had a unit disk sure supports the likelihood that it is original to the rifle.

That could be a replacement as in the 30's or as in now but it is doubtful it is original as it has no unit disk.
These are likely not to have take down bolts but lack of unit disk is suspicious to me and the stock has obviously been refinished at some point.

That said it is a nice looking gun

Nice rifle you have there. The one I am looking at is not that pretty, alot of patina in the bluing. The stock is a nice tiger strip. The rear sight is
original rolly poly. I thought the rear sling swivel was missing but from your pic, it has been removed and the sling attached to the trigger guard. I am
going to take another look at it this weekend if I can get there before closing. The "snooze, you lose" syndrome is nagging me though. It is about
125 miles away....chris3

on the front of the rear sight base is still there. The shop where I saw this rifle wanted 300 bucks for it and they would only come down whatever the tax
was. I scanned Gun Broker but there was no Amberg rifles listed in the first 200 auctions and none came up with a search. The shop with this rifle also has a
Berthier rifle that has been duffle cut, non matching. I would like to pick up both rifles but the prices are too high for me as I am turning into a WW1 nut
job.....chris3

The 98-22 stock does not work on a Gew98. The gew98 uses the short handguard which stops at the front of the rear site while the 98-22 handguard

Chris3,
Check gunbroker & select "completed auctions" to see what Gew 98's actually sold for. But the stock sounds like it might be off a Czech 98/22
(most of which were sold to Turkey).
