The thing that I remember about Shifty was that he said words to the effect that in other situations that some of the German soldiers and he might have had something in common; they might have liked to fish; they might have liked to hunt... How sad that people that might have been friends wound up fighting each other.

I was honored to meet Mr. Powers, along with Buck Compton and Don Malarkey a couple of years ago in Louisville at The Show of Shows/National Gun Day. There's not much I can add to what has already been said about these fine men. My sympathy to Mr. Powers family.

A few years back, we saw "Shifty" and a few other of the Band of Brothers cast at the Mid-Atlantic World War II Weekend. We literally ran right into them as they were preparing to board their van at the end of what must have been a long, hot day for them...all of them took the time to say hello and talk for a bit with my sons, tired as they were. "Shifty" made quite an impression on them with his soft-spoken comments and his gentle smile.

I'm glad that the WWII veterans finally got some long-overdue recognition. Easy Company and "Saving Private Ryan" spoke for all WWII vets. However, in the 1960's and 70's the honor due them was upstaged by the hippies protesting that we needed to get out of Vietnam, and the media and much of rock music (Four Dead in Ohio, On the Eve of Destruction, Blowin' in the Wind, etc ad naseum) who served as their two-bit whores. Don't trust anyone over 30, right?

Scott- that is an excellent picture of Cheapson. Unfortunately he is getting to look more like his old man every time I see him or a picture of him. He still resembles Cheapmom a bit, however. Happy Father's Day to you and your family, now that you are living in Boise. Sure would like to go shooting with you again.

In these days of so much trouble of every kind, the loss of Sgt Powers and each of his WWII comrades loosens the hold our memories have on our own history. The young people of today, hopefully will have their own heroes in the decades to come, as meaningful to them as ours are to those of us who were babes in arms when our heroes guaranteed the freedom and safety of the world.

My Grandma taught us the importance of knowing the previous generations..Memorial Day was always spent at the cemetary being "introduced" to family members, and hearing the stories again.....
It worked well when we all lived close by...however, over the years, we've all moved...seems farther and farther apart. The lessons stay--we always attend the local Veterans Cemetary on Memorial Day to remember, recognize, and be taught....

Nothing local was mentioned that I saw about his passing so I thank you for passing this on. In reading the article it became truly apparent that there is so little we can say about these men who did so very much and indeed are the reason we live the life we enjoy today.
