Hi Rome,

I've been seeing some new replacement M1 carbine stocks being offered in unfinished mahogany What do you think about this type of wood and it suitability
for a gunstock? Any suggestions for finishing and handling this wood. TIA

Sorry! I didn't see this post before for some reason.

Mahogany stocks would work but they do fine but they won't have much personality and they are more of an open grain wood. You can make 'em purdy with
the right colors and some good oiling but they won't look like Walnut which has much more personality and a tighter grain. Mahogany is also a softer wood
so it will ding and dent a bit more.

The Filipinos used Mahogany (native to their country) to re-stock M1-Garands & M1-Carbines left with them by the US government, as a repair/replace method.
It is a good, straight, strong wood, but it is relatively coarse-grained (like oak), and does not produce a smooth finish with BLO or Tung-oil.

The Indians have been using luan, a variety of mahogany to stock their old Enfields for some time I believe. Now how suitable that would make it for a Garand,
I can't say.
