I have a couple barreled actions that have good barrels and I am trying to decide what to do with them. I have been told that some of the spanish receivers were soft, as in likely to have bolt lug set back issues, but I am not sure if this is true of these later K98 type receivers. Anyone have any experience with week or soft Spanish receivers? Thanks, Smokepole50

I have lots of mausers and have never had headspace issues I could not resolve EXCEPT for Spanish mausers and it is always lug setback which can't be easily repaired. Yours and other's experience may be different but I have stopped fooling with Spanish mausers, except those made by the Germans. Check the muzzles for wear too - they often look good but the bullet will sink completely which usually tells that accuracy will be nil.

The funny thing is the barreled actions are painted black and is does not look like there is any reason for it. I see no pitting being covered up by the paint, just a few places were the paint was scraped off from normal handling. Maybe the barrels would be worth putting on a different action. Every Mauser collector needs one as a representative piece, however "target shooters" they ain't. All three had nice bores and crisp muzzles, none would group better than 6" at 100yds. They ARE at least "suspect" for soft steel, and therefore headspace should be reverified after each shooting, assuming that you own an 8mm FIELD gage. -------------------------------------------------------- What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you understand?

I'll check head space with a couple bolts and my 8mm NO-GO gauge. If they fail that test.....well maybe the barrels will shoot better in a free floated configuration. Regards, Smokepole50

Posts: 309 Apr 16 07 8:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	These are cool looking and historic rifles, but nice original stocks and fittings are not that easy to find. Since they are regular M98 actions, I would recommend putting them together using whatever M98 bolts and triggerguard assemblies you have laying around or can borrow off another rifle and a stock to drop them in. A cut-down or otherwise "sporterized" (dicked with) one will work fine. Then see how they shoot. If they show acceptable accuracy, they might be candidates for restoration, or could be put together in hunting rifle/truck gun configuration with whatever stocks you can find for the time being. Also, if you run across an otherwise nice complete example of one of these rifles with a bad bore or bubba'ed receiver, you could either use one of your barreled receivers, or just the barrel or receiver, as needed.

Posts: 330 May 19 07 10:27 AM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i had one of these that i bubba'd way back when i was 18. i know i have an excellent upper handguard, and maybe some various small parts (maybe even the bolt). i'll have to look if anyone is interested let me know. the receiver and bottom metal is now a Rhineland .45 conversion, due to my horrible gunsmithing skills at 18 and suspect metalurgy. advntrjnky

Posts: 19 May 20 07 4:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Why is it that these Spanish M 43 mausers can have soft steel receivers and be suspect. Then, when made into carbines [FR 8], will work well with high intensity 7.62 X 51 ammo and everyone wants them. I must be missing something? I think it would be safe to say that I have personally handled and fired near a hundred Spanish bolt action rifles in three calibers and have never experienced any setback of bolt lugs into the receiver. Now I have seen this happen to a German 98 Mauser action, a 1916 Amburg. My point here is. Are there soft Spanish actions? Probably. Are there soft German actions? Yup. My experiences would tell you that Spanish actions are better than German actions. After all, the Spanish copied the mauser design rather well.

The Spanish never really did learn how to case-harden the wear surfaces (ie: lug seats) very well. Even if the receivers are very soft you would not see a blown up rifle, more like a hard to open bolt after firing. I just traded for the nicest 1953 M 43 short rifle I have ever seen. All numbers match and the bore is excellent. Missing the cleaning rod. I am really anxious to shoot some of my stash of Greek heavy ball through it. I feel that Spanish arms may not be finished as well as some other makers and I always suspect any milsurp until I remote fire it and check it out but I have always had nothing but good times with Spanish guns. Happy shooting

When I first got it, I took it out to the range and was frightened almost to the point of having wet pants when I saw the case stretch & deformation after first five rounds. Really serious headspace problem! I contacted a local gunsmith and took the rifle in for his opinion, which was basically "It's toast, part is out as a parts rifle." At that time, I also had been working with a guy named Mel Doyle, who's name had been given to my by one of the guys on the C&R FFL email list. Mel Doyle was then located in Hell's Gulch, Idaho or was it Utah?? Anyway, I love the name of that town. I sent the rifle to Mel for his assessment. After he got the rifle, he called me up and said I had two choices: #1: I could have the chamber reamed out to a wildcat round 8-06 or #2: He said there was sufficient thread length for him to trim as I recall something like 1/16th or 1 thread off the barrel and then rechamber it to 8X57 Mauser. Since I wanted to keep it in original caliber, I told him to go ahead and to also test fire it. Some weeks later, I got the rifle back. Total cost: $45 which was cheap. I took it out to the range once after that for a test and all was perfect. With all the conflicting rumours about Spanish this and Spanish that steel, I put it away in the collection and have chosen not to shoot it again as I have many others to choose from. All of the above in consideration, "there is, at least from my example, a problem with Spanish steel." Posts: 87 Jul 20 07 5:37 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i feel this "soft steel" thing comes from firing hot loads in M1916s converted to 7.62 i have an M1944 that i would trust with any surplus or commercial 8mm load... i just don't shoot it often as it has a very worn and rough bore and groups as you'd expect of course my rifle's reciever has some faint markings that makes me think it may have been a czech rifle at some point
