M91-30 Stock fix up |
Lead | |
|
I just received an M91-30 that is a great shooter but the wood leaves alot to be desired. Shellac in some places & none in others. Is it workable to
respray shellac over the entire stock & hand guard & then buff it down with 0000 steel wool & oil? Or is there a better more effetive way to go?
Any advice from the group is appreciated. I want her to look correct & good. Thanks alot.

You can remove the existing shellac and start from scratch.(which is the way to go IMHO because it is flaking and probably not going to stick to the wood over
the long run).
You can find garnet shellac flakes at Woodcrafters. Shellac is a breeze to mix and work with. I apply it with a fantail shaped brush which leaves a very smooth finish and makes it easy to controll the amount dispensed. |

Shellac dissolves itself. If you spray on more, it will blend with the old. I would suggest you gently work off any flaking shellac and spray it with clear.
This will repair the finish leaving it in original appearance.
Be advised, the guys on the Mosin forum will consider that "refinished." And yes. You can knock down the shine with steel wool and oil. Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock. Will Rogers |
