My 1903A3 "blew up" yesterday

I got my 1903A3 and my buddy had his 1903 and we went to the range.

His 1903 shot the Greek CMP ammo just fine. Great groups, etc.

His 1903 shot the CMP Talon labeled ammo, but the groups were not as good.
He didn't think the Talon did not feel as zestful as the Greek.

So far, so good.

My 1903A3 shot the Talon "ok".

On my very first shot of the Greek, the stock cracked from front to rear, right down the middle, top to bottom.

The bolt was stuck closed and would unlock, but not extract the round nor go rearward. We took the bands off, took the action out of the stock and continued to work the bolt, lock, unlock, lock, unlock and it finally let go. The brass case visually appeared swollen, I took it with me to measure it against my CMP and Greek CMP ammo.

When the shot fired there was no unusual sound or sight. I saw the round hit paper.

The barrel appears fine. The Greek case would not go into my buddys 1903 chamber.

Any clues or wild guesses as to what happened today?

Both the CMP Talon and Greek ammo work just fine out of my three Garands.

Anyone know of a good 1903A3 gunsmith in the western Washington area?

Your description of the case means alot. Shouldn't be "swollen" if it was in the chamber. The rear of the case (head) could have ruptured sending gases down to split the stock. Possibly your bolt extractor is damaged too now and that is why you had trouble getting the bolt back. Don't mess with the case and take it along with your gun to any good gunsmith. You said "there was no unusual sound or sight", should have smoked and blew gas back. Any photos?

That sucks but at least you walked away to shoot another day. Glad no one was hurt! Did you check the headspacing on the rifle before you fired it. If so, did it pass the No-Go and Field Guages? Just curious, I haven't shot my 03a3 yet.
