According to an online inflation calculator, what cost $14.95 for a N04. Mk1 in 1958, would cost $103.40 in 2006/2007. Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2006/2007 and 1958, they would cost you $14.95 and $2.16 respectively. Imagine what a pocket full of today's $$ could get ya!! GREAT AD!! Not like you would want to invest in them for the monetary grouth as compared to the stock market but just based on those two items surplus guns were quite a bit cheaper even figuring in inflation.

The way I look at it is how long you had to be at a job to get the money to buy something. Wages are a lot higher now, but how many people had deductions for IRA's, healthcare insurance and such in 1958 as compared to today? Also what was backbreaking work in 1958 is now mostly done by a machine that makes the same job a bunch easier and quicker. I am old enough to remember those ads and how I used to drool over them. The rifles in the barrels at the local hardware store were coated with more than grease and cosmoline. They were also coated with drool from a young kid I know quite well! Curt

Paid $60 or $80, I forget. Paid $110 for my Browning High Power NIB, have the receipt for that.

Hunters Lodge; Ye Ole Hunter was the mail order group of Interarms; Interarmco, of Alexandria, VA. Outfit started by Sam Cummings, importer of surplus WWII arms other era arms available post war. A good percentage of the non import, vet bring back arms so popular and desired are actually surplus that Cummings brought in. Back in the good ole days they did not have to mark em like today. Believe it was after Cummings died - and certainly after GCA 68 that this outfit and several others started disappearing from the scene. The story I hear tell is that Cummings daughter started that operation in Tenn. I grew up about 5 miles from the Ye Old Hunter store and from my early teens through college years we used to stop by there about twice a month to see what was new. They had all the mil-surp rifles (some sporterized) and handguns out on display in stacks and rows - look'em over and take your pick. Interarms and following gun stores (no relation to the old outfit) occupied the site up until recently and I understand the City of Alex bought the site as it is now a choice location. Wish I had back the rolling blocks, el tigre carbines ('92 win clone), Springfields, and Lugers my brother and I bought there and traded off over the years. By the way, for you Star, Llama and Ballester M. fans, a gunsmith who used to work for Interarms has a shop down the street from the above location (no gun sales-just repairs/parts) and has parts and expertise to fix those pistoles Espanol. www.mmgunsmithing.com Don Last Edited By: DonW 11/11/07 01:15 PM.
