Bill, I appreciate your concerns about the site starting to get a bit cumbersome. Perhaps a solution would be to condense some things, rather than
"cut" them. One example that jumps out to me is the fishing forums. Perhaps all of these could be combined into one "general fishing forum"
because there have been so few posts there. Maybe we could add a "General Hobbies" forum with the "Fishing Forum" under the title of
"Non-Gun Hobbies". Just a thought. Also perhaps we could add a "Custom Sporting Rifle Forum" in the non-milsurp gun section. Just my
thoughts.

Naturally if Bill decides to add more forums for any reason that is his business. For the record, though, a five-minute Google exercise reveals these:
http://www.treefrogtreasures.com/forum/index.php (a toy soldier forum) http://www.flightlines.com/ (a model airplane forum-there are dozens) http://www.modeltrainforum.com/ http://www.baseballforum.com/ http://www.footballforum.com/ http://starwarsforum.net/ http://genforum.genealogy.com/ Etc. I could go on forever, but Yucko will only let me do a "quick reply". Tim |

That's all nice and good Tim, but I belong to many forums. None approach the quality of this one. I'm specifically looking for the same bunch of guys,
not a different bunch. I belong to the most baseball forums after gun-related stuff (four to be exact) and not ONE approaches the level of civility we have on
this forum. Ditto with the two model train forums I belong to. What I can't quite understand is why you're so absolutely dead-set against this.
It's adding one forum, it's not been done yet, and how can it hurt (it may possibly help)?

I like the idea of general catch-all forums--ie...'Fishing', 'Sports', 'Gardening', etc..
This way the clutter would be moderate but we would still have a place to BS about our other interests. As for the 'slow-down' on posts, blame that on milsurp evolution. The firearms that we are 'allowed' to have are drying up--thus.

I like the idea of having other hobbies listed. I find it time-consuming, having to log into or mouse click onto other sites. I like to spend what time I
have online, doing quality things. I would love to have one site that covers several of my interests. For instance, shooting baseballs with shotguns while
riding on a train, what a wonderful sport. I think someone should approach the Olympic committee.
As others have stated, this is a great site, friendly, educational, and consistent. A good bunch of folks. That consistency in a broader range of forum topics would be most welcome.
I would suggest a poll, to gather a list of other viable forum topics. Then maybe things could be compressed, trimmed, and sized-up. P-Bill has done that to some extent, and should be commended. I assume the management of such a thing as this site takes a lot of time, something we all would like to have more of. It is encouraging that he is considering the various requests and such. Maybe if he were a better shot, he could get his deer hunting out of the way early in the season, instead of chasing bucks all over the countryside. Then he would have more time to grant us all our wishes. Just kidding Bill

I think a few "catch-all" forums would be a good idea. I would volunteer my services as a moderator for any of these forums. I'd help in anyway
that I could.

Thank you Sean! I find the ideas of okieman, groundsman03A3, and Sean all to be very good, jiving with my original idea quite well. I too will do anything needed of me on this new forum. Moderator, just to post there, monitor the place, whatever. |

"I'm specifically looking for the same bunch of guys, not a different bunch."
And that's exactly why it won't work, and doesn't work for the fishing forums. As a thought experiment, make up some numbers and do the math. Let's say there are 10 million computer users in the world, and 1 percent of them (100k) are interested enough in model trains to go looking for a place to discuss them. They won't think to look here--they'll find a dedicated model train forum. If 1 percent of those are interested enough to participate in discussions, that's a pool of one thousand conversationalists. On the other hand, how many active contributors are there here? A few hundred? Let's say it's a thousand. If *five* percent of those are interested in model trains, and *ten* percent of those interested will actually participate, that's only five people. Lurkers don't count, since by definition they don't participate in discussions. I also read many forums, and some of them are so busy with unused claptrap that it's hard to find the few topics of interest. I did actually give up on one forum because it became so tedious to navigate. That said, it sounds like the pro-hobby side is winning here, so knock yourselves out, have fun, and good luck. Personally, I come here to talk about guns. Tim |

I really could care less, one way or the other. But I have found that when you open up a forum to hobby discussions, that is where you will meet the people
with opposing beliefs. At least all of us here are into firearms, but on another forum I am a moderator on, if I mention anything to go with guns, some people
come absolutely unglued. So if it comes to be, then the only thing I hope Bill does is to have some vigelant moderators to keep an eye on things.

"And that's exactly why it won't work..."
If hasn't even started up yet...why not give it a chance before passing judgment? "But I have found that when you open up a forum to hobby discussions, that is where you will meet the people with opposing beliefs." I think you misunderstood me. The purpose of this new forum would be to maintain the same group...the forums will still be ParallaxBill's Curio & Relic *FIREARMS* Forums. The purpose of a hobby forum (not multiple hobby forums, Tim) would be to generate discussion from existing members. A hobby forum for guys who like guns but also other things; keeping the people we already have. I think that's the issue here. We all know the milsurp market, at least for new milsurps, is starting to burn out. As a result, people are starting to drop out. Now imagine some guy who collects old foreign banknotes and sees that someone else does on the catch-all type hobby forum? If you were him...and you can substitute any hobbby for old foreign banknotes, would you A) ignore it as Tim would seemingly imply, B) start up a relationship with him via PM regarding that hobby, or C) post about it in the thread he mentions it in hoping to see if a third guy posts there? I don't think A is really a realistic option unless you're honestly THAT bothered by forum navigation. It's just B or C that I think would happen, and frankly, I think option C is what will happen. Judging by the 508 views this thread has had since its late night start 4 days ago, I think at least a few people are interested.

haha.....Duh!
I don't really care if we get the new hobbies thing or not. If we do, lets put it at the bottom of the page, and keep out beautiful milsurps on top! |
