I got a new MAS 36-51 I think I did pretty good. |

So I was at the fun store today, and I found a MAS 36-51, it was in NEW, literally UNISSUED condition, I mean it looks like someone got in a time machine, went
back to 1954, took this rifle off the end of the assembly line, and brought it back. It's all matching, 100% finish on the metal save for some very slight
negligible wear from the bolt being opened, and closed, the Grenade Sight being raised, and lowered, and the bayonet being taken, out, and attached, but it
looks like it was no more than a few dozen times on any of them, the wood finish is also 100%, and there are no dents or dings AT ALL, save for a few handling
marks by the rear band, it looks like someone (I'm guessing the factory given how the rest of the looks.) was having some trouble getting it to fit so
theres some small compression marks at the rear, and theres one small less than a centimeter in area compression on the wrist area of the but stock, other than
that it's completely smooth like it just came off the stock machine, and the relief cuts for the Grenade Sight Leaf are sharp, and crisp, like they were
made yesterday, the stampings, including full cartouche also appear fresh, and sharp, like the rifle was never handled at all after the stampings were added,
the serial number on the forstock, even has little shallow squares around the numbers from the stamps themselves. It came with the sling, and recoil pad which
also appear brand new, although the recoil pad is dated 1956. I'm not sure when the serial number dates from exactly, but the Cartouche on the Butt Stock
is dated 1954, and like I said the Butt Stock matches the Receiver, so I assume that the year of Manufacture was 1954 the serial number has an F prefix. The
paint on the Grenade Sight Leaf markings are discolored slightly Yellow-Orangeish, but the paint is 100% intact. The rear sight is unmarked as far as I can
tell. There is practically no fouling to speak of, just trace amounts possibly just from a test firing, and there is no Cosmolene to be found any ware on, or
in the Rifle as near as I can tell. It's a Century import with the old small stamp, barely noticeable on the receiver. This seems to me to be about as
close to a pristine example as humanly possible, this was how they looked when they left the factory.

I got my MAS 36-51 from SOG around the turn of the last century. It was much as you describe yours except for a new but much older non-matching buttstock.
This rifle was even still in the arsenal paper wrapping. You did well finding a nice one like that now. Dennis Jenkins |
