Is This Type 99 Worth It |
Lead | |
|
I know where a type 99 is for $300.00. It is in pretty nice condition except it is missing the butt plate. The bolt and receiver serial numbers match. It is
the type made without the wood on top of the front hafl of the barrel. It also has the fixed rear sight, barrell band not made for monopod, and was made
without the ramrod. Is it woth this much money? thanks

If I were going to pay $300 it would have to look good. Butt plate is no problem. Does the stock still have all the original finish, does it have the mum? Be
best if you could post a picture. riceone

"Substitute type 99 Rifle." | ||

From the description, you have what is known as a "Substitute" variation of the Type 99, made in 1944-45. Same robustness as the Normal T99, but with
a lot of machining shortcuts etc., in both the metal work and the stock. You may NOT be "missing" a buttplate, as most Substitute 99s have a Wooden
Buttplate!!!. it is a collectible variation in its own right...consult "Military Rifles of Japan "(Honeycutt) to correctly place it in the proper
series and maker.
Such rifles, despite their "ratty" appearance, are actually very good shooters (My 3rd Rifle(1967) was (and still is) a similar T99 as you describe, and it is a 2 inch grouper off-hand at 100 yards...and many a wild pig can testify to that.!). Price? $300...US$? may be a bit steep, but condition is everythoing in Japanese rifles....Being used to buying them in bulk for Movie use at less than 150 each, I may be biased...but I don't think that $300 is outrageously expensive....just a little over the top...Try for $250....You never know your luck... Thanks for the replies. This Type 99 does have the mum. The gun has not been refinished. The wood is still that light reddish blond brown color with nicks and
dings but in pretty good shape. The metal still looks pretty good with no rust or pitting. The butt plate I'm pretty sure is missing. The man said it
should be a wood one. Can anyone tell me where I might find a wood buttplate and the price it might be? I offered him $250.00. I will know tomorrow if he will
sell it for that. He also has 2 more type 99's. I know one is miss matching bolt and receiver. The other one I have not seen but it has the turned down
bolt. What is this one you think? Thanks Keith

I just talked to the owner of the rifle . He said he would take $260.00 for it. The serial number is 74836. This rifle does not have the Jap numbers below the
Mum telling that its a Type 99 and never had any there. Can anyone tell me what series it would be in and any other info you might know about it. Also will need
help on a wood butt plate. Thanks Keith

I bought the Type 99 today for $260.00. It is in very nice condition with mum and matching numbers on bolt and receiver. The gun stock is very nice with no
dings , scratches , cracks etc. I am very pleased with the condition. It is a Series 8 Nagoya. I do need a wood buttplate for it. Does anyone have one they
might sell. The same man had another Last Ditch 99 with matching bolt and receiver but the mum was ground off for 250.00 which i think he would take 225.00 but
i really don't need another one. It is very nice too.

A wood butt plate will be hard to find; better choice is to make one. Each was individually fitted and would not be exactly the same size anyway.
As we say, you didn't pay too much; just a little too soon. We need a picture of the serial number area to help you more. You may try the site below and ID it yourself: castle-thunder.com |
