Well, guys, my Thai is a little rusty, so I wasn't able to translate much of it, either. I will have to ask my Thai friends to translate.
Saw wat dee Grumpa, From what I remember, 1964-65 was about the time the US really started building up the airbases in Thailand for the air war in Vietnam. Most of the weapons loaders (462X0) I knew who were on active duty in the 60s and early 70s spent time in Thailand. Over and over in my 22 year career I ran into many friends and aquaintences I originally met in Thailand. I still see some of them frequently. Odd you don't meet any Thailand vets. I even know of some from ME, but they didn't return home to live after they were discharged. Anyway, welcome home. George |

OK, I know my spelling is way off. I wasn't ever in Thialand but I have two friends, one born and one stationed, in Ubon. He was in the airforce and
married Amphon over there. When Amphon meets other Thia people and they call thier home, his Thia is so good, they don't know they are talking to an
American untill they meet in person. Young American guys in Thiland would have used these phrases. Check out those breasts. Check out that butt. Did you ever
see a F-You lizzard? ( I couldn't remember how to say lizzard so I used the name snake).
Sow Wat Dee is the way friends would say hello. The more proper way is "Sow Wat Dee Kop".

George, Thanks for the "welcome home." Two months after the USMC made the beach landing in Viet Nam I was done my tour. When I got home it was
still very early in the conflict. Not many people knew where SE Asia was or did they care. It soon became unpopular to be a Vet. I've never talked about it
much.
In the fall of 64 I relieved a Airman on TDY from DaNang that was going home. When did it all start? I think we just took over from the French. MP78, I,m good friends with the infamous lizzard. I'll try to get a picture of my dwelling for 10 mos. Regards, Grumpa |

Enjoyed your story, with the interesting bits of beginning and end of RVN. Thought I would mention that I arrived at the Log Center in Pleiku about 6 months
after you left, and moved over to Artillery Hill a bit later. Welcome Home, Bro.

Thanks for the welcome back. Same to you. How did you find Arty Hill 6 months later? I'll always remember how beautiful the hills were to the north of our position. When I left the central highlands in the fall of '70 there were NVA units moving in the area and we started getting some increased activity at one of our firebases, FB #6. I remember that there were several air strikes in those same hills the week before I reluctantly left for Cam Rahn Bay. Did you serve your entire tour in the Arty Hill area and did some of the units move out? What unit(s) were you assigned to during your Army career? |
