I know that they are supposed to be quite accurate. I have a 1942 SA with 'lock bar' sights. Is there a concise article anywhere that explains how to use these sights? I tried using the instructions that were on the original WWII video. Did not have much success. Also, my son and I took this rifle out into the country to test fire at someone's personal range. The shortest distance was 100 yds. We could not hit the paper. We tried adjusting these sights in all directions and could still not hit paper. Could not tell if we were High, Low, Left or Right. If we could ever put one on the target, we might be able to 'Walk Them In' to the bulls eye. Is it customary to start at 50 yds ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Volga

At this short distance it is virtually impossible not to "hit paper". Once you see where your shots are printing the very minor adjustments (if necessary) to windage and elevation should allow you to "walk them in" to the bull's eye. Then you are ready to take the target out to 100 yards and depending on whether your shots are high or low compared to your point of aim, you can adjust your elevation accordingly. Nope. Waste of time and ammo. Crank the elevation to the bottom, then bring it back up 8 clicks. Shoot at 100 yards for a group only at the biggest hunk of paper you can and see where the POI is. Forget the bullseye until you have group. The ammo and where the rifle came from matters. Not all .30-06 ammo is suitable(150 to 180 grain bullets. No 'Light magnums' and sometimes, if the barrel isn't up to standard, throat erosion and muzzle wear), it may be too far gone for really good shooting. It's far more likely to be an ammo issue though. The rifle was designed to use .30 M1 ammo with its 174.5 grain bullet at 2640fps, not .30 M2 ammo's 152 grain bullet. Buy a copy of 'Hatcher's Book of the Garand' and 'Hatcher's Notebook' too. Amazon, if your local gun shop doesn't have them. Set the windage on the long mark in the center of the rear sight base as a starting point, as well. Trying a clip or two at 25yds. isn't a bad idea, because, if you can get it on paper, you can see if it's grouping or scattering. At 25 yds., you should be getting no larger than a 3" group or so. If it scatters them all over the paper at 25 yds., it's time to look at other options. As T O'Heir suggests, if you can get a large target backboard, like a 4-foot X 4-foot sheet of cardboard, it will help you dial it in at 100yds. Assuming that it groups OK, then keep in mind that each "click" of the sight knobs equals one-inch at 100yds. If the windage is way-way-off, you can loosen and slide the front sight in its dovetail in the opposite direction that you want to move point-of-impact. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you understand? Metal and barrel (1949) seem to be in pretty good shape. Barrel is bright and shinny with no apparent problems at the muzzle. For a 1949 barrel, it looks almost new. I am shooting the Greek ammo that is sold by the CMP. On my next trip to the range, I will try your suggestions. Originally, I thought that maybe I was not using the rear sight correctly (poor adjustments), or possibly the rear sight is out of proper alignment?. I usually have no trouble hitting the target. No matter how I adjusted the rear sight, I could not find paper. Thanks again for the info. Volga

Set the sights to where you are grouping at 2 1/4" above the bull, and that should have you dead on at 100 Yds.
