Mounting a Long/ Intermediate eye releif scope on a M96 Swede Mauser |
Lead | |
|
Does anyone have any experience in mounting a scope on a Sweede w/ o having to bend the bolt? I am thinking of under the leaf site. There is metal there that
might lend itself to being used to attach a mount?

Old Sneaky here: "B"square sells a mount that fits in the rear sight slot (after removal of the rear sight lief). Then a Long Eye Relief/Scout Scope
must be used and bending the bolt handle is not required. THANX--SNEAKY

Welcome to the forum.
The B-Square mount can be found here: http://secure.armorholdings.com/b-square/mauser.html S&K also makes a mount that requires no modifications to the rifle. It can be found at: http://www.scopemounts.com/ I have some experience with B-Square mounts for other firearms, and it's generally "good." While I have no experience with S&K mounts, I read that they enjoy a better reputation than B-Square mounts. A bit more expensive, but apparently worth it. Good luck with your project.

I have an M96 with a Burris 4x LER on a B-Square mount and I like it really well now. Originally I had mounted it on a rifle that had some noticable side to
side play on the sight ladder, which meant that my scope was prone to that same play and my target frequently showed horizontal stringing. I partially solved
that problem by simply using the thumb of my left hand, while holding the forend, to push the scope to the right and let it settle back to it's natural
position. This helped alot, but didn't wholly cure the issue.
Then one day I noticed that one of my other M96's had been heavily "bumped" on the sight base's right rear corner "ear" such that the ladder sort of snapped into place when all the way down. This rifle now wears the scope and horizontal stringing is no longer an issue. I would guess some sort of shimming or possibly a judicious "accidental" bump might help this mounting issue on many rifles. |

I have the S&K scout mount on a 96. it's great. I would do it again. Their scout mounts work on the K-31, Yugo 24/47, the MN91/30, and something else
but, I'm having a senior momet.

Nice clean system you have developed there Dutchman, but do you think it could be workable without altering the setscrew hole to a larger thread for a bigger
bolt? The ideal is a completely unaltered rifle!
Perhaps milling the base so that it has wings to engage the sight spring undercuts instead of relying on the setscrew for mounting?!?! Or possibly using an old broken sight spring and bolting that to the underside of the mount block. Still, that is without any doubt the tightest looking mount system I've yet seen for these old rifles, and I'm very glad you shared it with us. THANKS!!! |

Aubullet -- I'm way ahead of you:)
http://www.rebooty.com/~dutchman/ler.html And yes, when I finally get around to the 4th generation for the m/96 Swede it'll utilize the top hat anchor method without drilling out the setscrew hole or using the setscrewhole at all, at least on the m/96 Swede. Dutchman |

Dutchman, really like that low mount. I love the scout concept but most mounts are too high, making an unnatural shooting posture.
By the way, I'm checking out that House of Karlina website. It's awesome.
If the truth hurts.....maybe it should.

I dont think Dutch sells his mounts but he has told everyone that you can feel free to make your own from his directions. I also believe that his mount can be
made with hand tools as lng as you ar carefull and take your time...Jim

Hi Everyone Here is my attempt a building a scout scope base for my Swede M38. I would like to thank Dutchman and the excellent details on his mount on the House of Karlina website. It gave me the greatest inspiration toward completing this project. I obtained some weaver bar stock from Brownells and used some hardware left over from a S&K mount. Here are some pics of the finished product. Please note that due to the bar stock being a bit narrow I had to shim the mount to eliminate side play. I range tested it today using swede M41 ball and Privi partizan SPT's and had 3/4 inch groups on average at 50 yards. The scope is a NC star 4x32 and The M38 is 1944 dated. Am looking forward to handloads as this rifle showed great potential when tested with the iron sights. Will post more results as I develop my loads. Mike
