30 rd carbine magazines |
Lead | |
|
I'd like to pick up one or two 30 rd magazines for my Inland. I figure that true ex GI mags are pretty scarce. I keep reading posts about 30 rd mags that
don't work well or wear well. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. dhlochm (soon to be Electron Don)

I stick with the 15 round USGI mags. I've never had a bad one.
After 2 completely useless 30 rounders I gave up.

The aftermarket 30rd mags are hit-or-miss, and you'll also have to make sure that you've got a late-replacement M2 Mag-catch installed on your carbine.
Even with the M2 mag-catch, they may or may not work well. The 15 rounders ALWAYS work.

I have one USGI 30 round magazine that I have had for many years. It works well, but no matter how I load it, I can only get 29 rounds in it. Has anyone else
ever seen this?

In my experiance, you always load a high capacity magazine 1 or 2 rounds short of the stated capacity. It saves wear and tear on the spring and improves
feeding realiability. When the 30 rounders came out for the M-16, I never carried them. Instead I used all the discarded 20 round magazines because I was able
to get closer to the ground.

Very true, and I have heard that from a lot of VN vets. But if it only holds 29 rounds, why didn't they call it a 29 round magazine, even if you only
loaded 25 rounds in it?

I purchased the aftermarket 30 rounders from RGuns and they've worked fine for me in a couple different carbines.

I'd suspect you have something out of order or mis-assembled in your 30 round mag.
Genuine USGI 30 round mags held 30 rounds. Commercial magazines are strictly hit or miss. One will work fine in one gun, won't feed a single round in another. Most USGI mags are clapped-out surplus that are bent or so worn they don't work well either. Again, it's luck of the draw. |

I was issued a M2 in RVN. Mags took a full 30.
I had owned a couple M1 Carbines before serving, same-same 30 rds. I was glad to get a Car 15 finally and trash the relic. |

I have a USGI 15 round that will occasionally misfeed. I keep it stored seperate from all my other carbine mags now.
I also have never had a problem with AR15 mags loaded to 30 rounds. Of course, mine have never been in the mud or swamps, just to the range. |

Thanks, I may reconsider this idea and just go with the smaller magazines. If I haven't hit what I'm shooting at with 10-15 rds, its not likely that
I'll ever hit it. I think I was just worrying that we might not be able to purchase 30 rd magazines in the future.

I'm one of those lucky people that a $19.95 aftermarket 30 round mag works in my M1 carbine perfectly.
