No.8 Mk1 |

I came home from the local union hall gun show today with a No.8 Mk1 .22 .It's a very small show, but close to home and lots of friends show up.There seems
to always be some good deals on things that interest me.When I first saw the Enfield laying there,I wasn't sure exactly what it was but I knew I wanted
it.The price was $470 which was a bit to much for me.After walking around awhile I saw that it had been reduced to $340.That seemed reasonable but I still
waited.I ended up getting it for $305 out the door thanks to a quick loan from a friend Two of my buddies were waving the money at me after I told them I
wanted it.They both know about my Enfield addiction. Thanks guys! When I got home I looked it up in Skennerton's book to find out what I had.It says "F
50" over "CR 324" on the left side of the butt socket, / 52 on the right side. There is "49" over "CR345" lightly stamped on
the metal plate that replaces the magazine. It has a matched forestock and receiver,"A11251", but a bolt marked "A1067".The bottom of the
buttstock at the wrist is marked "CR512" over "F51".The bolt head is marked "1".The correct sight is on it too, with an
"F" mark. It's in beautiful original condition overall, looks nice and shoots fine.I'm really pumped to have it,I've never seen one before
and feel that I got a great deal on it.The owner told me that some of these ended up in Egypt at one time, but didn't know much else about them except that
the bolt was a little tricky to put together.I put a WWII type Enfield sling on it but don't know what would be correct for it.Does anyone out there know
about the sling or any other details on these?I'd really appreciate any information on it,I didn't find much on the computer tonight.

These are great rifles. I have several of them.
I think you got a smoking deal. I am away from any of my books so I can't quote anything. Many of these rifle were sold new to New Zealand. My nicest one has South African markings. I use mine shooting with the youth cadets at my club. Many of the youth are very good and shooting big money Anchutz rifles. I keep pace with my 50 year old rifle. Here is a link to cadets somewhere fireing them Got any pictures of yours?

Sounds like you've got a rifle assembled from old spare parts that were lying around. From what you say, the receiver was built in 1950, the mag well
blanking plate in 1949, and the buttstock in 51. If the woodwork's matched to the weapon, you'll find the correct serial number stamped on the
underside of the furniture just behind the forward sling swivel.
Does the barrel number match the receiver? Needs the furniture removing to tell, number is on the left-hand side just forward of the receiver. The "CRxxx" numbers are just the manufacturer's codes, Skennerton's probably has a list of which number indicated which manufacturer. M47C was BSA Shirley, F was Fazackerley, B was BSA's main plant in Birmingham. The WW2 Enfield sling is correct for the rifle. We still use them with the cadet forces here in the UK, although there aren't any spares for them at all in the supply system any more. They've been declared obsolete, the replacements are due into service in December. Got any pictures of your rifle? |

Thanks for the info on the sling and video.I thought it seemed like a parts pile special after I started checking all the numbers. It's been a busy week so
I haven't taken it apart yet to check any other markings or clean it,something I normally always do as soon as I get home with a gun. This one was so clean
when I got it I didn't feel the need to tear it down right away,I just cleaned the bore.I'm still happy with it,I've never seen another one and the
price wasn't so bad.Our camera died but we're getting another one soon. When we do I'll get some pics on here.

Here's a UK site that I have found helpful with regard to all the British training rifles. This site is their page on the No. 8.
http://www.rifleman.org.uk/War_Office_Pattern_Miniature_Rifle.htm You got a great deal, even if it is a made up rifle. Its still a No. 8 trainer. Post your pics on the 22 trainer forum as well when you take some. You'll find it below the Enfield page on the main index. Congrats! Larry |
