Oddest cartridge:....297/230 Morris Long
|
As I am the owner of two Francotte Martini Cadet rilfes in this 1890s calibre (more a "subcalibre" ), I got around to make my own cases ---I ran out
of original berdan primed BP loads, and as the primer was smaller than the standard "small berdan" there was virtually NO way to properly reload
it...except for boring out to "Small Rifle Boxer"...case web too thin for such a conversion.)
I started with .22 Hornet cases...Trim, Swage down to size, Turn and Thin rim...This last operation under a magnifying glass. I have even offered the service at about $4,00 a cartridge case.... The only advantage of this case is that it is effectively a Centrefire .22 Rimfire. Bullet diameter is Odd as well ( .228, Heeled. --I use Heeled .22 Rimfire Bullets (From a friend who makes them), and with the thick necked case (remember, .22 HornetBrass), they seat wonderfully and bump-up to seal the Bore( stiff smokeless charge). Basically a "Miniature Range Cartridge" (as it was designed for Morris-tubed Martini-Henry rifles and the occasional Long Lee Enfield with a purpose built .230 barrel.) Other "Odd" cartridges I do: Rimfire 14mm Wanzl (Austrian transitional breechloader) with a turned brass shell case holding a rimfire blank .22 short as an ignition device; Conventional centrefires which could be classed as "odd"---.276 Pedersen, 7,62x45 Czech, 11mm Albini (Belgian), .58 Spanish Berdan, 13x92SR Mauser A/T and a host of other "obsolete and little known" Black Powder numbers (Military, of course)...and that's only rifle calibres...Pistol Oddities T26 Nambu revolver, 9,4 Dutch revolver, .442 RIC Webley, 11 MM Swedish convcersion from Pinfire ( == 11mm French revolver) etc. etc. "Obscure" is in the eyes of the beholder...obscure or odd in the USA may be common elsewhere... You are hardcore, Doc! God bless you for keeping those old guns shooting. I'm guessing Wally World does not have what you are looking for, huh :-)

297/230 Morris, the Martini-Henry subcaliber training round
|
I also just got a Tabatiere 17.8x35 forming die from CH-4D, so that probably will become the most obscur round once I actually start loading this Spring. Since this is the only 17.8x35 die ever made by CH-4D (based on my drawings and chamber cast), it is a safe bet there aren't many loading for it.

Does that little guy use .22LR bullets?
I saw in a CTD catalog Wolf .22LR bullets, not loaded ammo for sale and I wondered what they could be used for. |

.297/230 Morris Long/Short
|
As far as I can ascertain, the Morris cartridge used a .228 diameter lead Bullet with heel, similar to a .22 RF ( at least the European made ones I have
dismantled, did)
I have an acquantence who swages all sorts of .22 calibre Bullets, for Rimfire(heeled) and jacketed using spent de-headed, .22RF cases. He does this commercially, but I haven't heard from him for a few years (he was a regular at the Brisbane Gunshows (from Newcastle, NSW). I tried some of his Heeled .22 RF 40 grainers, and they worked well at close ( saloon type) ranges, in my thick necked formed cases. Regards, Doc AV AV Ballistics. |

Obscure is probably too kind for the loads I had to work up for my Iver Johnson Safety Hammerless.
The chambers had been reamed long ago to take .32 ACP cartridges, and the gun had been damaged by the pressures and hard jackets. I was able to upset enough metal with a punch to reshape the lugs and straighten the bent latch pin. Since I could find no local source of .32 S&W BP loads I decided to make my own. The standard S&W case held far too little powder so I got ahold of some .32 S&W cases and cut them to ACP length then took some .311 cast bullets I got from a guy that reloaded cast for his Enfield and cut the base off the bullets and turned them around so the rebated base meant for a gas check now acted as a wad cutter. I crimped these in place on the last lube groove so only a smidgeon of the bullet entered the case mouth. When loading these up I'd just use the primed case itself as a dipper and seating the bullet compressed the load just enough Since I had no dies for this caliber I used the old Resistence fighter trick of drilling a hole in a 3/8 inch steel plate and polishing it out till cases tapped into the hole with a rawhide mallet were sized just right to grip the bullets lightly till I tapped the cartridge into the crimping die of my .303 Lee Loader. When removing the case from my steel plate "die" I just used an old pin punch as a decapper and pushed out the old primers at the same time as I pushed out the case. I cap these by setting them in a larger hole in the plate and use a steel rod chucked into my drill press to press the primer home. I use the same method when priming .303 cases, the handle of the drill press giving great control for consistent seating pressure. We can call my "wildcat" .32 BP loads the "Temperflash Medium Case BP Pocket .32 Mini-Magnum Wadcutter" LOL. These loads work suprizingly well. BTW I've since used standard Smokless .32 S&W in this gun and though the serial range indicates it is not a BP only frame the latch pin consistently bends. I think I'll stick to BP with this gun. Heres a picture of it. http://hillbilly.diinoweb.com/files/safety%20hammerless.jpg

Not too obscure I guess. .455 Webley with 290 grain hardcast, 13 grains FFFG.
There are many others, but too common to be "obscure" and mostly already mentioned. |

That's original, Temperflash! You really want to shoot that gun, don't you? Most would have made it a safe queen, good on you! I have a nice IJ in 38
S&W that I handload for. I was sending 158 grain Ranier copper coated bullets so slow that you could EASILY see them in the bright sunlight as they arced
towards the target. Low pressure indeed. I think my potato gun has more oomph! LOL!

Would the 416 Taylor be obscure? I don't own one, but saw one down the range for the first time.

Nothing too odd .22Hornet, 25-20 and .348 Winchester, 8x56r Hungaian, 9mm Largo. Oh and 14 ga shotshells for a Martini Henry Egyption Police shotgun. This ones
easy. It has a straight 14ga shell, not the bottleneck one. So a couple wraps of 2" masking tape on a factory 16ga shell makes em fit fine! LOL

8mm Nambu
Make the cartridge case from 40 S&W Cut down some old cast 168g gas checked 8mm, then resize to .320" Depending on the cut, bullet weight can be 102g or 83g Seating depth is different for each The standard Nambu round has a rim thickness of .045" but the thicker 40 cal brass works well Tried shaving the rim thickness to duplicate the Nambu but found it more trouble than it was worth Tried the commercial 85g plated bullets but they don't seem to be as accurate as the cast G |
