Win. 97 & steel shot - Would you? |

A friend of mine has a 97 3-screw that was his uncle's. It had been re-blued and he recently put a new stock set on from Boyds. It's a beautiful looking gun! He wants to shoot some trap and maybe hunt ducks with it. Is it advisable to shoot steel?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
You do not want to shoot steel or any very hard non-lead shot through a 97. Lots of older guns with modified or bigger, preferably IC, can accept steel shot, but you risk ringing the gun if it doesn't. I'd stick to bismuth shot unless he can find something cheaper that's guaranteed OK for his gun and choke. The smaller shot, like in trap loads, is easier to tolerate than larger duck or goose shot sizes. |

NO! Get a cheap, modern Remington or Mossberg/Maverick for the steel. Period.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.
The steel cartridge makers specifically warn against using steel shot in older guns. It WILL destroy the barrel. |

Some people claim you can shoot steel in a modified choke, but not full. I wouldn't risk it. |

Just curious:
What is the approximate cut-off age for steel shot? I have a 1926 Win mdl 12, is it safe? Thanks, Michael |

I wouldn't use steel shot, a modern innovation, in anything but modern guns. I can't tell you when the cutoff would be but I'd feel pretty certain
1926 wasn't it.
Figure, modern shot guns are made to tolerate the destructive stuff. None of the older ones specifically were. Can anybody tell us just when steel shot was introduced? I don't recall. Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock. Will Rogers |

NO!
Nothing full choke and modified is iffy - the more open the better, like IC, nothing made before the general introduction of steel shot, and IF AND ONLY IF the manufacturer allows steel shot. If you have an old gun shoot lead or bismuth, not steel or tungsten alloys. |
