Rock Island Armory pistols |

I bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 A1. I like the overall appearence. Fit and finish are tight, literally. Fired 18 rounds and flawless cycling. Anybody else have one, can give me some reviews?

I have one. It is my first handgun but I like it. It works fine now but I had some problems with failure to feed and failure to enter battery at first. After
some polishing (don't hurt me!) and just putting a bunch more rounds down range it has almost no problems. I do wish I had different grips for it. Found a
picture of a really nice pair but I can't find anyone who makes them :-( . I also wouldn't mind some 3 dot sights to replace the iron sights.Other
than that I love it. And for $300 brand new you can't beat it.

Picked one up a few years ago shoots well, but will only accept good quality magazines. It has very close tolerances. I understand they are made on U.S.
supplied machinery.

The first imports from the PHillippines years ago were pretty bad. These modern ones are, by all reports, excellent.

Any retailer that carries Armscor (Rock Island). I've heard they are an excellent value for between $300 and $400 depending on style...military, officer or
compact. I only wish they were approved for sale in Massachusetts. They don't meet the AG's saftey requirements which the AG put in place to protect us
stupid citizens that want to own handguns! These rules deemed thye Glock unsafe so for the longest time new Glocks were unavailable to Mass citizens but they
allow most of the police in the state to be issue them!!
Buy the way this is referencing new pistols not C&R. I don't know enough about 1911's to say there were Rock Island Armory pistols made for the military that wouyld qualify as C&R. Just to be clear.

I've had one for a couple of years and I love it, haven't had a single problem with it. I picked up a couple of surplus magazines and they both worked
fine after I tweaked the follower a little to get the slide to hold back, but of course it prefers the original Novak magazine. I keep meaning to pick up a
couple more of them, but I never seem to remember to do so when I have money

If I don't have a gun store around me that carries Rock Island or Armscor, does anybody know where I can get a catalog or a website to investigate them
further?
Thanks. |

Check the 1911.org website...they have forums for different 1911 manufacturers, including Rock Island Armory and Charles Daly, both made by Armscor.
FWIW, I have been shooting 1911's since the early 1970's, and all I own now are Armscor - made pistols. I have owned 5 over the last 8 years or so, and they are excellent - very reliable, very accurate, great price. I have 2 Dalys at the moment, and if I decide to buy another 1911, it will be an Armscor made one. The RIA's are available online for under $400 from Centerfire Systems - just make sure you are buying the RIA - they sell several other makes that are not in the same league. mark ALSO: See the review that 1911.org did on the Charles Daly 1911 this month. |

I am looking at the Rock Island Armory 45 M1911 pistol. I have read that it is almost identical to the military issue M1911-A1.
I am curious if what I have read is so much BS or it is correct. (1) Specifically, I read that some say that the magazine release button is a little different from the standard magazine release button. (2) I have read that the grip holes are a little different than the standard magazine grip holes and a little modification needs to be done with other brand grips. (3) I have read that the RIA has not drop safety or firing pin safety as required by some states. Personally, all but the last item sound like minor cosmetic issues that I can easily leave with and the significant savings is well worth the the slight cosmetic differences. The third item, I wonder about, because it may mean that there could be laws against the ownership of such a pistol in certain states. This in turn makes me wonder if I took the RIA-1911 with me in different states when I travel, if it would create potential problems in states which have recipriocal CPL agreements with my state. From those more familiar with the RIA could you let me know about any significant differences with other M1911's on the market? Thanks |

Doing a little more reading, it sounds like a titanium firing pin (about $20) plus an extra power firing pin retaining spring (less than $5) should
dramatically reduce the need for the firing pin safety. It also sounds like all true Model 1911 A1's don't have the mechanical holding device on the
firing pin, which seems to have been added well after John M. Browning went on to his rewards.
Any thoughts as to the Rock Island from this or the other aspects? Thanks |

RIA 1911 | ||

The RIA passes the California safety standards, so it should pass just about anywhere. I changed the grips on mine, and there was no positioning problem
(the mahogny looked great, but was a little to slick). I have also changed out the hammer, and there was no fitting problem with the Colt hammer or the Colt
hammer pin that I used.
As for the magazine release, the one that came on mine is of the standard pattern. |

Thanks for your comments. I purchased a RIA Model 1911 A1 and just got back from the range earlier today. Prior to taking it to the range, I field stripped it
and cleaned it. I was impressed that the feed ramp & chamber look like they had been buffed. I found nothing wiggled, as others elsewhere have posted.
The most surprising thing to me was how light a trigger pull was required. I have a lot of handguns and this one has the lightest of all trigger pulls. It was increabily smooth and light. I have pretty good form and saftey habits; only place finger on trigger after sights lined up on targer and ready to shoot. A couple of times today, it seemed like it went off the moment I practically put my finger on the trigger. That got my attension. After I got use to it, it was hard to go back to my other pistols. Over 70 rounds with no Failures to Feed. I am very impressed that the RIA Model 1911 A1 isn't a military issue gun, but a slightly tuned handgun ready for use at a range for some serious target shooting. Although I didn't purchase it as a match gun and don't intend to shoot competitively, I am pleasantly suprised and happy with the RIA. Thanks again. |

Robert: My Charles Daly EFS (Armscor-made) was bought used. Previous owner had replaced some parts, and I am not comfortable with a 1911 that someone else has
"improved", so I stripped it and re-built it, changing some parts for aome of my choosing. I bought 1911 parts from 5 different sources, probably 7
different manufacturers. They all fit with no problem. This is the full-size 1911, has Novak sights now. Installed
custom grips, again, no problem with fit. I use Colt-type GI mags only-they have always worker perfectly for me, where some "better" mags have not. (My Compact Daly uses MecGar mags only.) I have both my Dalys for nearly a year now. I would recommend any Armscor made 1911 pistol to someone wanting a basic, working pistol that is reliable and accurate. I use mine for carry and home defence, as well as shooting for pleasure at the range. FWIW, Centerfire Systems has them for about $330 for the basic RIA.( They also sell other 1911's-make sure you get the RIA!) I read posts on the 1911.org site of Armscor pistols well into the thousands of rounds fired with no problems. They make an excellent pistol. mark
