1899 Oberndorf |
Lead | |
|
I had a very hard decision last weekend. In my left hand was a matched ,very nice early 93 Spanish. In my right hand was a M/96 Swede by Oberndorf. I love my
early Mausers and had to make a choice. Well, for 20 years I've been giving every "decent" Swede I find a home and haven't gotten a 99 OB.
This one has something extra going for it. My 99OB gap is filled.

I can't see the 1893 Spanish but it would have to be a very fine rifle for me to walk away from a tiger stripped Obie. I bet the Obie will out shoot the
1893 too. Nice rifle........

That stockset is very nice indeed. Tell us the rest of the details like matching or not...Jimbo

That's a beauty! I think you made the right decision. My '99 Obie gap is still unfilled, but one of these days I'll find one, hopefully as nice
as yours!

It is all matched except the 2 bands. The stock is original to the rifle with all the proper German makers stamps. A single GB Crown on the wrist and the same
on the barrel. The marking disc was updated from a two screw. The finish is 80% on the rec. and 50% on the barrel. It has not been threaded. The bore is decent
and cleaning up nicly.
The Spanish 93 was Mfg. by Lowe and it was very nice. All matched. If I'd of had another $50 in my poke that day I would own both. |

That is without a doubt an exellent find. The two bands are a minor m/m but I'd be willing to bet that you are grading the finish on the barreled action on
the low side. The wood is beautiful and the closest thing I have to it is on a 1891 Arg.. Both are very pretty for inferior wood...Jim

Nice Wood often makes all the difference! | ||

Very, very nice rifle! I had one shot at an 1899 Obie, that was all matching, but the deal breaker for me was the Beech replacement stock set... Swede arsenal
wood for sure, but just wasn't the same as a nice striped stock like yours... Congrats!!!

That is just one beautiful Swede, Can you give a range of what it cost? All the nice Swede's are going up so fast it's hard to have any idea what they
are going for.

The rifle was $250 OTD (asking $295) purchased at a decent size show. I started when the best of the best were under $100. I've changed my standards some
and if I'm to continue I must change what I willing to pay. I'll pay more but not "to much". My personal top dollar is $300 and it's got
to be EXC.
I saw 2 at a local shop last week. One matched except bands, $475 The other was very nice but refinished @ $450. That's to much. I feel $200-$250 is a fair price. They are out there. Regards, Grumpa |

Me too! I have at least over a dozen and used to turn down exceptional 96's for $100. Now I have been working on some other mausers and also a fews more
94's but they are about dried up.

Grumpa: I've only been collecting Swedes for about 3 years, but have paid some of the higher prices you mentioned... I seem to not find beautiful
all-matching Swedes for as cheaply as you indicate. In fact, I hate to admit it it, but of my five 94-14's, I've paid $675. for one and MORE for all
the rest. Each are all-matching, and two are 1895 Obies...but my collection is costing me! I generally have bought on gunbroker and if I didn't want to
lose them felt I had to pay. Should mkae all "earlier buyers" feel good, though...
