Argentine 1909 in 30.06 |
Lead | |
|
Bought a Argentine 1909 today at gun show it has been converted to a sporter with a 23 inch stepped barrel marked cal 30.06 and the correct ser.# on the right
side I have heard that these 7.65 conversions are not accurate in 30.06 but when I put a 30.06 ball round in the end of the barrel it shows more than 1/8 inch
? are these accurate with military 30.06 ball ?

Bubba'd Argy in .30 cal | ||

In a Word NO NO NO.
These abominations were done by Importers in the late 1960s to clear out remaining stocks of good M1909 Argy Long rifles and Carbines(some Mint), due to GCA68 and an Argy ammo shortage They simply ran a standard 30/06 reamer in, and extended the chamber. Nothing was done to the rifled part of the barrel. So a standard .30/06 cartridge will fit, and fire...the bullet, being grossly undersized, with rattle down the bore (usu.. .314) and go on its inaccurate way, occasionally keyholing. The Only solution to your situation (given that the rifle is already a "sporter") is use the action as the basis for a new Sporting rifle. Ie, get a new barrel, [properly made for 30/06 or 308]. If you had a still compelete Military rifle, the shootable solution would be to handload your own .30/06, using .312 (ex .303 British) projectiles, and Polishing out the Neck area to allow for the increased neck diameter resulting from the use of bigger diameter bullets. Otherwise, "neck Crowding" can occur on firing, raising Pressures dramatically. Regards, Doc AV AV Ballistics. |

If the bore is so undersized then why does my 30.06 bullet show over 1/8 inch when I put it in the crown of the barrel some of my m1 rifles don t show up this
tight?

pipefitter,
I suggest you try your rifle out with the military ball ammo. It may surpise you, or it may suck. If your a handloader you could load your .30-'06 brass with .311/.312 British Enfield bullets. Slug your bore first to make sure this would be an appropriate diameter bullet and that these bullets will slip into the neck of your fired brass without resistance to insure the chamber neck is not to tight for these oversized bullets. Actually not all of these rifles are rechambered 7.65 barrels a number of them were asenal rebarreled to .30/06, others were rechambered 7.65 bores and these
can still be accurate if you reload using Hornady .312 bullets designed for the .303 british and Jap 7.7.
Best to slug and mike the bore and get a chamber cast. Only real problem with using the .312 bullets would come if the chamber neck was too tight. Thats not generally a problem if the chamber was cut to military specs. |
