?Weather proofing varnish on pulled projectiles? |
Lead | |
|
Old Sneaky here: Recently bought some .308 projectiles that appear to have been pulled from belted ammo?? There appears to be a ?varnish-like? residue below
the canelur and I'd like info on what to use to remove it.. THANX--SNEAKY

If they were made that way at the ammo factory, probably the varnish won't hurt anything if they are fired as-is. Lots of older military rifle-type ammo
was sealed with an asphalt-base compound and these went down the bore just fine. If you want to remove it, lacquer thinner is pretty good at removing such
substances and dries quickly without leaving a residue. MEK is very good at the job too. Be sure to use either one of these in a ventilated area.

I think I'd ignore it, load a couple dozen and shoot them. If they fly straight just load them up as is.

Better still, also load up and fire some with the varnish cleaned off to compare against. I would be interested to see what the difference is.

Old Sneaky here: Thus far I segragated into149.6>150.9, 151.0>152.0, and GTFOOH. Then soaked the 1st batch in mineral spirits over-nite and then ran them
thru my case viber-ator. came out 92%clean. I'll have to get a cheep Lee 2 die set (F/L sizer and seater) and then load up for my Garand with 49gr
IMR4895. These projectiles are Israli 151gr. APs and I'd never seen projetiles with 2 canelurs. THANX--SNEAKY
