new production bolt action battle rifle? |
Lead | |
|
This is one of those simple 'what if' questions just for fun so jump right in. Given the chance to build a new bolt action battle rifle would you
simply select one of the proven designs of the last century or would you militarize one of the commercial designs of today. Why? What features and materials
would you include in your version and why? What would you avoid and why? Cheers

A British SMLE type action with a short type cartridge like a 7.62x39. A reliable action that was proven faster that any other, made faster with a short
cartridge. Imagine a Jungle Carbine in 7.62x39 or something similar. Just a thought. I don't know if any of the Comercial Designs would be tough enough.
I know some modifed comercial rifles were used as snipers. May be some actions would be ok.

I would say either the No. 4 modified to .260 Remington or a Springfield 1903A3 with the front sight of a 1917.

Bolt actions | ||

I still think there's a lot of advantages to a rugged, reliable bolt action rifle in some cases. On today's battlefield, for modern front-line
soldiers, it wouldn't be practical. For CQB and room clearing, no way. I can't imagine kicking in a door and entering and clearing a house with a 7.62
bolt gun with a CCO and a tac light.
Realistically, with cheap rifles like AK-47 not even the dirt poorest 3rd word country would ever go back to a bolt gun.Even here in Iraq the Iraqi Army carries a hodgepodge of various AK's from different countries (Romanian, Yugo, Russia, etc.) But, if it were decided that a main line issue bolt gun was needed in 2008 for some army in the world, and I was picked to design it.........because I'm a purist, it would have the elements of all my favorite bolt guns. It would have the heavy, durable Mohagany wood stock of the Indian No. 1 Enfields, for starters. Then, the proven and rugged action of the 98 Mauser. The peep sights such as those on the MAS 36, rugged and easy to acquire, but unlike the MAS the rear sight would be fully adjustable. I would say the sights of the 03A3, but the front blade is too delicate for the abuse military rifles get. Caliber would be 7.62 Nato. Of course, being like I am I would rather carry an M1 Garand then the M4 I currently use. I'll take steel and walnut in a caliber that will take almost anything down, than a plastic and aluminum pop gun. OK, I'll modernize a little and I would carry an M14 if given a choice. At least those are still in service in the Army, minus the wood stock and with a scope and usually a green paint job. But hey, it's still around and the fact that these old rifles are still in limited use makes me happy. But, in the real world a new military bolt action rifle would probably have a synthetic stock, an optics rail, a detachable magazine and basically be the ugliest bolt gun ever. |

Speaking of "ugliest bolt gun ever".....
I think an Indian Enfield 2A would be hard to beat. Fast bolt, 7.62 round, 12 shot mag, and very "handy". Rear sight prolly upgrade to a peep. I have more MNs and Mausers but I think I would pick the 2A to go infantry with. Also very pleasant to shoot. Kidding about ugliest! |

sounds like Stan might like the Madsen...30-06...rear peep adjustable elevation & windage...muzzel brake...recoil pad...
There is no right way to do a wrong thing !

A #4 MkII Enfield in 7,62x51 Nato with an improved stock would suit me just fine.

timbo762,
This one must be pretty close: http://www.lawranceordnance.com/lawrance-ordnance/rifles-aia-no4-mkivt.html Warning: Don't look at the price though!

Yea, that's a beauty. Interestingly, it appears to have the simple "L" type sight. For $1295.00, you'd think they could have provided the
click adjustable one. Has anyone out there heard how these shoot or know of a USA importer?

These AIA rifles are also available in the guise of Jungle Carbines in 7.62mm Soviet - an example of which I plan to pick up next week.
They do have simple L type sights, however I believe these can be replaced by the old adjustable type. Also, I understand the 7.62mm NATO version will accept 20 round M14 type magazines, while the 7.62mm Soviet type will accept civilian type AK magazines. |

I think I would try to modernize it as much as possible, I would use a Plastic Stock, with a full Pistol Grip, it would be chambered in 7.62x51, and take FAL
Magazines, or alternatively M-14 Magazines, dependng on who it's issued to, and the action would either be an Enfield Action, or a Krag Action, and it
would have a 2 stage Match trigger, and the Rear Sight would be the same as an M-16A2/AR-15, and the Front Site would be the same as an M-1917. Basically it
would be an Ishapore 2A that took FAL, or M-14 Magazines, had a Plastic Stock, and a Pistol Grip, and an M-16/AR-15 Rear Site, and an M-1917 Front Sight.
Alternatively it Would have a K-31 Action, and the same Chambering, Stock, and Pistol Grip, Magazines, and Sights that I already Mentioned.

Modern bolt rifle | ||

I would take the K31 in 7.62 NATO with a 30 round magazine. Supreme accuracy, detachable mag, nice sights. Add a 3x ACOG sight and you have a viable weapon,
even by modern standards.

Apparantly the AIA doesn't use M14 magazines - looks a lot like them but the catch is different and I'm not sure of the details or what the mods would
be. I've read good reports about accuracy and got to fire one at the range a while back. While they appear well made and very solid (and heavy), I was less
than impressed with the peep sight - there was something wrong with it. Maybe the hole wasn't straight or something because the image would distort badly
while trying to centre throught it. When I say distort, I mean at times a double image of the target - I've never seen a peep sight do this and it
wasn't just my eyes, the owner had the same problem. It may be an easy fix though.

I also wasn't that impressed with the peep sight on the examples I handled. For my taste, the hole was too small. However I am led to believe the rear aperture can be replaced by a standard type. |
