Barrel shroud dents & dings |

Anybody got a procedeure for removal of dings in the barrel shroud? My latest acquisition would be a damned sight prettier if I could lose them.
Thanks, Dave

I heard stories about finding a a socket that will just fit in the shroud and driving it in and then back out. Supposedly it works. I would lubricate it good.

I have considered the socket idea myself but have not tried it. Another thought would be a shotgun barrel "iron" used for removing dents in shot gun
barrels. Perhaps you can find a smith that has one?

Here is what I did and it works well.
I cut the threaded shank off of a junk barrel and ground a small bevel on the end. The remaining chamber area is just the right size to fit in the sleeve. I put some grease on the end and use a mallet to drive it under the dent and then use a small smooth face hammer to remove the remaining dent. Sometimes a little heat from a propane torch helps. Go easy with the hammer and you can usually remove all the dent. I have used this method on several sleeves and is has done the job on all of them. |
