That's just the milsurps, other lost opportunities include: The Winchester 52C target gun at a police sale for $250 - couldn't figure how to remove the bolt so I played it safe. The other Winchester 52C target rifle some guy at the range was selling, this one was $750 but came with all accessories including the scope A Wincester M70 Classic sporter in '06 being closed out for $350. Honestly though, I don't loose any sleep over these. They are misses at the margins. Over 20+ years of collecting I've racked up a lot more good hits than bad misses. I'm still way ahead of the game.

I have paid 4 times that for nice models as of last year and saw a really nice short rifle in a gun shop priced at about 600. I did acquire half a dozen Swiss K 30's when price was 69-89. I passed on a nice Krag in a Colarado gunshop about 18 years ago and wish I had gotten it. JJK

Put a 1927 Ishy Ex-Dragoon 91/30 back on the rack to get a 1927 Tula Ex-Dragoon 91/30. Should have taken them both (they were $70-80 a piece). Didn't buy Chinese SKS's when they sold for $90 or SMLE Ishapore's for the same price. You learn.

It will take me years to shoot that stuff. Overall, I have at least one example of every rifle I ever wanted, just never got around to getting the rarer stuff when it was cheaper. I collect shooters anyway, so rarity of a gun that sits in the rack isn't as important as a more common gun that is fun to shoot at the range. Missed the unissued Persian 98/22's but got two good cond. rifles with minty bores. Also missed the rare SKS's but my Soviet refurb is cool enough as a shooter.

But realistically, I saw this at age 15 in New York state. No way I can legally get that. BUT...I recently found out about one I missed big time. It was a Savage Model 1899 Lever Gun, the absolute highest grade available in mint condition with a factory letter confirming year of manufacture as 1900. Three-digit serial number. It was either that or my Norinco Type 84S-1...they were both $1,250. I went for the Norinco, which goes for just a little over that in NY State on average. And the Savage 1899? That sold at auction for $25,000.

Back in the 60's I was collecting Japanese guns, mostly type 14 and 94 Nambu's. I still own all that I bought, most with extra mag and holster for around thirty bucks. The one I let get away was a Nambu type 100 sub-gun. It was legal with the papers, in good to fair condition. The price $100.00 (one hundred dollars) kick, kick, kick. I didn't buy it because of the two hundred dollar tax, but I did get to shoot it, awesome. But then again in those days you could buy gas for Twenty nine cents a gallon, full serve. Whats fullserve??? For you youngsters, check your oil and fluids, check you tire pressure, wash your windows and give you a set of drinking glasses, thank you and ask you to come again. And I just paid $3.49 and pumped my own. I bought a matching German Luger for thirty bucks and a perfect USGI 1911A1 WWII gun for eighty bucks. At the same gun show there was a table full of .30 Lugers for three for $100.00. I passed didn't think you could get ammo. Kick,KIck,Kick. Shalom

I figured that as long as they were that cheap, they would be around for a long time. Well, I put off too long and I missed out on them. So I still don't have one in my collection. There was a barrel of of Springfield trapdoor carbines for $60 ea. But that was in 1972 and not sure that constituted a bargain- then- but I wish I had it now! Mosin Nagant in the wrap, $29. For some aberrant, inexplicable reason I thought they were... ugly?! Wisht I had filled the pick up now. One deal I regret, and I don't know that it was a 'bargain.' Probably fair market value. But I passed on a nice Polish Mauser (Wa29?) for about $250. I wound up buying something else. Haven't seen another one since. Still wish I had picked it up. The most outrageous would be in the early sixties. You could buy a Finnish Lahti semi-automatic 20mm anti-tank rifle on skis no less for $100. Shells were $1 each. Dad told me to forget it! They are classified as "destructive devices" today and sell for $10,000 plus.

An author I've read mentioned that his dad DID buy a PAK gun (on wheeled carriage) in 20 mm......and they did shoot it! Wow.........ya, had I been my dad I would have jumped all over that! GREG PS: I came across an International Harvester M1 Garand at a pawn shop in 2006.....I had already bought so many guns that summer I passed on it....which sucks since it was fairly close to dad's rifle serial number he carried in the Army.
