M 44 US Trigger |
Lead | |
|
Is there an adjustment (or aftermarket part) to make a better pull on the trigger? The rifle was recieved as dry as a bone, no oil or any type of lube ;and mercifully not caked in cosmoline, but the trigger seems to break like a brick. I have lightly oiled and cleaned w/no effective change.
Any suggestions? |

I've never heard of an aftermarket trigger and they aren't adjustable. I would take the trigger assembly out using Hoosier Daddy's sticky above and then polish and stone all mating surfaces. By polish I mean with jewlers rouge or very fine Arkansas stone so you don't remove metal or change angles, etc. Get them to look like mirrors. Then I'd use a good gun grease like Tetra to lube the touching surfaces. If that doesn't do it then do a search for a lighter spring.

as reddogge has said, be careful when polishing. These are stamped steel and case hardened. Too much polishing and you will go thru the case hardening. The trigger pull will then change after use.

I had mine done by a gunsmith. He got it significantly better than it was and if it was just a tad lighter, I would put it up against any benchrest .22
including my own Rem 40x. The trigger is the only thing holding it back from reaching its full potential.

Somehow I posted under someone else's name, here it goes again:
The trigger on my 44 came crisp but kind of heavy, and since there are no aftermarket wolf springs available I cut a coil off the hammer spring. This reduced the trigger pull from 3lbs 11oz to 2lbs 7oz. But please be advised I am not advocating you do this as you may get FTFs if your spring strikes lite. As suggested trigger jobs are best handled by a professional gunsmith. I did it because if I experienced FTFs I would simply buy another stock spring from Victor Havlin.

I recently bought a nice 44US bolt on auction. I tried it in my rifle and found it produced a fine trigger. Someone in the past had did some grinding on the
firing pin sear contact area and got good results of trigger pull.... But the bolt will not pass the saftey test. If the saftey is applied and trigger is
pulled, its ok, but then when you take the saftey off, the rifle will fire. I'll personally shoot the rifle as is, but will get a new firing pin to install
if I ever get rid of the rifle. I would not recommend the modification as it could be a dangerous situation, just passing along the infomation.

Guys remember that heavy modification of these rifles changes what they really are. They are not super match rifles just training rifles.

Thanks for keeping our eye on the ball H.D. and remember guys, we aren't going to be discussing heavy modification to these rifles on this forum anyway and
that includes drilling and tapping for scopes. There are other forums they just love to talk about that but not here. If yours came D&T'd from the
government then no foul but few did.
