Unissued 1903A3? |
Lead | |
|
Won a 1903A3 at an on-line auction yesterday and have been cruising the forums since. I've seen a couple of references to "unissued 1903A3's"
sold back in the day by the DCM/CMP and am wondering if the one I got could be one.
Excuse the pics--they are from the auction site [url]www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.asp?size=full&ahid=2277&aid=11854&lid=3164616&aiid=0

It would be hard to verify that it's unissued, but that sure is a Cherry!
The park on the receiver looks to be a little thin, but then again, Remington was really cranking them out back in '43. Take some pictures when it comes in and share them with us please. |

Not sure I beleive in unissued 1903a3's, I'm sure there are exceptions. Here is one I bought at a local auction last year. It came from DCM in 1955 for
$19.00. I paid $650.00, came with leather sling and nickle oiler. Sure its looks new but was rebuilt at one time as I'm sure yours was

I have a 1943 Remington 1903A3 that was purchased from the old DCM well over 40 years ago. I bought it from the owner who purchased it back in the mid
1960's and he had it stored away in a closet for many years and forgotten about.
The thing looks like the day it came from the factory, stright stock and such. But the only problem is that it is missing the top barrel band, the one that holds the bayonet. I have a band to put on it, but there is also no hole in the forestock where the bolt that anchors the band goes thru. For this reason, I think at one time it was restocked when rebuilt and it was probably done on a Friday afternoon and got shipped without the missing parts. It is a two groove barrel and it shoots pretty darn good with rubber bands holding the forestock on. Curt |

Nice 03A3, Orlando
Thanks for the feedback.
One of the gun store employees that conducted the auction is a regular on another forum and PM'd me with his evaluation of the rifles (1903A3, Eddystone and a Winchester P-14) that I got. Said they were all very nice and that he would see that they were shipped out promptly. As soon as they arrive, I will post more pics. Thanks again |

brody729 - Very nice M1903A3. Probably not "unissued" but from the pics it would appear to be non arsenal rebuilt. When you get it throw up some more
pics and check all the parts for markings. You did very well with that rifle.

m1 talker wrote:M1 Talker, Here is an M1903A3 I picked up a little over a year ago. It was arsenal refinished to like new condition, but the stock that was on it was in much rougher condition than the excellent metal parts. I got an unissued USGI surplus "C" stock from a buddy of mine and put it on. The stock was still in the gov't wrapping and dropped right in. Except there was no hole for the muzzle cap screw, just like you mentioned on your stock. I went ahead and drilled the hole.

I wonder why the hole was not drilled?

I wondered about the Smith Corona 03A3 I got from CMP a few years ago. It has only a grey park finish including the bolt. When I got it there wasn't even
any scuff marks on the bolt and all the metal is a uniform grey. It looks like a arsenal re-build with the RIA stamp on the stock. It came frrom the Greek
returns and I don't believe they issued it at all.
Was the original color on these park or blue? Here are some thumbnails:
Oh, and it shoots great! Steve |

The rifles I got came today, including the 03A3. Got to take a close look at all of them before the dealer put them in his safe for the 10 day waiting period.
Noticed several cartouches not pictured in the auction pictures: A "P" in a circle behind the trigger guard and the letters "OG" on the
stock behind the pistol grip.
I'm not sure what these mean, but other than that , the rifle is pretty much as described --"as new" condition. I'll post some pics after I get them from the dealer 10 days from mow. |

'OG' = Ogden Arsenal, Ogden Utah | ||

Look all over; Usually there is a box with EK OG, for Elmer Keith, chief inspector at OG during the WW2 period...

as noted above.
OG indicates a trip through the ogden arsenal, where at the very least it was looked at. |

I do not believe that the "OG" was boxed--just the letters O and G.
Is the lack of boxing around the "OG" meaningful? If it was examined at Ogden, is it possible that it was only inspected and not "re-arsenaled"? Thanks, Steve |

There are several versions of the Ogden Utah stamp including EK, boxed and unboxed, as well as just OG. It is my belief, and several other collectors familiar
with 03A3 variants, that there were in fact, some 03A3 rifles inspected and stored without issue. Some of these apparent "stored" rifles went through
the Ogden fascility. It is impossible for me to offer an opinion on your particular rifle without looking the rifle over in person, but it is not out of the
relm of possibility that these unissued, yet arsenal stamped, rifles do exist.

The original finish consisted of a Parkerized barrel/receiver and most other parts a blue/black. There is some evidence that a couple of parts on later
M1903A3s may have been Parkerized.

Those "unissued" A3's are beautiful to look at. Just lucky to have one. The quality of blueing, considering the fast production, is
remarkable.
If the truth hurts.....maybe it should.
