Looks good beside its younger brother:
Now I'm wondering what model "Turk" bayonet would be correct for this one? Also any chance of finding an appropriate cleaning rod anywhere? Would length would it be?

The same bayonet and rod from the newer Turks will work in that one as they were all "upgraded" to be similar in configuration and appearance.
Nice grab for $80!!!!

You did ok,paid a fair price for what you got.Should be able to pick up the rod and bayonet from Gunbroker.com . I"am sure this turk will clean up
nicely.Just be sure to clean up all the old cosmoline and look for any headspace issues. Don"t forget to post a photo after your done.

After reading your post,I brought my 1938 K-Kale to the range with several others that live in my gun safe. Everything was cool while shooting the fal and
cetme. The old turk comes out of the gun case and all of a sudden these two bubbas want to get into a shooting contest for a little cash. After ten minutes of
insulting the turk, let the contest begin.Best of ten at 200yds. Mauser 8mm is just getting warmed up,30-30 winchester is running out of steam, fast. After
twenty minutes,it's all over. I walk away with $100, remchester gets it"s butt kicked by a seventy year old surplus rifle.Like takeing candy from a
baby. So,before you start on the outside appearance of your new purchase.Take him to the range, let him be seen.Remember,a bubba and his money are soon parted.
And a turk is just the rifle that will do it ! Still LOL !!!!

What should I do to the outside appearance? Should I clean and lighten up the stock? Not really sure what your saying I should do? I Know the turk I already
had didn't shoot well with surplus, shot ok with remington, but shoots awesome with some handloads!

Just make sure he is shooting ok,replace any parts that need to be replacing.Find which load works best.Just as you did. Then take care of the wood and metal
finish. My point is that you have a super rifle in the raw ! People will be fooled by it at the range ,they could get stupid, and it will cost them. For sure,
clean and lighten up the stock. Make him look like his brother in the photo !

Just wipe everything off really good, no need to go shining up the stock. It is what it is!
That's a nice looking piece of walnut.

Glock40man,
I see you stated you have a Turk K'Kale rifle dated 1938. Is that a typo? A 1938 dated K'Kale marked rifle would be very unusual. There have been a few pre-production 1939 dated rifles found but production on the K'Kale didn't begin until 1940 and ended in 1946. Joe |

It looks like a small ring 1893. It should cock on closing. Here is a link that shows what it is.
http://www.turkmauser.com/93/ I would pay $80 for it ... no problem.

Mr Pete, you are correct and just beat me to posting the same thing. Carl

Yeah it cocks on closing! I like this gun. It has a better bore than my other posted above. Hopefully it'll shoot the same handloads pretty well.

I just checked my '42 K Kale and the cleaning rod is brass, 27 5/16" long, and the threaded end seems to be a bit larger than a VZ-24 or M-48.

My '93 is a great shooter! Bet yours will be, too.
I would never dream of "cleaning and lightening" the stock or putting a glossy varnish on it. It looks way too cool with its old worn oil finish, which I freshened up a little by rubbing a bit of boiled linseed oil into by hand. Normal maintenance for an oil finish.

Thanks for all the good info | ||

cmw0081, thanks for posting this. I also just picked up a 1942, except I paid $100, so it looks like you got a better deal! Mine looks to be in about the same
condition, also minus the cleaning rod. Thanks to WVChuck and glock40man for the info on the bayo and rod, too.
I'd like to do a thorough job on cleaning the wood, so would like to remove the action/barrel from the stock. I am brand-new to Mausers, so I need "edumacation!" Where is a good source for take down info? Is there a particular book or manual I should locate? Being as I am mostly using this rifle as a prop, I'm not too concerned about actual range performance, but I enjoyed glock40man's story! Thanks also to Mr. Pete for the Turkish Mauser website link - I'm visiting there next. Looks like a good set of message boards here. Glad I found y'all. |

You stold it! It's an antique, usually goes for a lot more than a 38 Turk. I prefer to download by 20% to keep the pressure within the original 45,000 copper units of the 7.65mm Mauser it was made for. The 8mm it was rebored or rebarrelled for in the 1930's is a 49,800 cup round. Strength isn't really the potential problem as the 1893 is plenty strong but lacking in gas venting. So be sure you use eye protection. About 10% of the 1893's I bought had headspace issues so check that it's within field guage limits, or close, as modern guages aren't exactly the same as the originals. |
