1946 M44 W/1. TRZ~~Help! |
Lead | |
|
Hey all, I won a 1946 Izhevsk M44 on auction arms for $76.51 (I think!), well, with shipping and tax the whole price was $105.05. This M44 is just super, mint
bore, mint wood and exc. bluing. Everything matches with butt plate lined out and renumber to match, all are stamped. On the butt stock is stamped, 1. TRZ
which stands for Yugoslaiva. Am I right in my thinking that these M44's were made in Russia and sent to Yugoslaiva. Well, I have been told that these Yugo
M44's were 2nd or even lower grade rifles. I have not got to shoot this gun yet and now I am a little worry that the above may be ture. What do you guys
and gals have to say about this? Please, anything, any info at all you can tell me about this M44 will be a great help. I think you so much. noodlenut08

"2nd or lower grade..." yeah, who told you that and based on what! My Yugo'd 1946 M44 certainly is NOT! It should be minty Soviet except for the
"1.TRZ" stamp on the stock, the stock's oil-type finish, and the top of the rear sight elevator arm is "in-the-white". A small number
of these came in a few years ago with batches of Soviet M44's and collectors pay about twice what you paid for yours, generally speaking. Like most
anything, if you are looking for one, they are hard to find. "1.TRZ" is the abbreviation for "1. Tehnicki Remontni Zavod", or
"Technical Overhauling Institution No. 1", located in Cacak, Serbia from 1944 to 2005. You have a carbine that was part of the history of two nations
that really do not exist any more. Regards.

Over the years, I have heard many of these gunshow claims that a particular type of rifle is inferior to a rifle a guy may be selling. A person has to learn to
raise above all the bovine effluent they hear from others at gunshows, gun shops, pawn shops, and such. Just come out and ask them to their face where did they
hear that and ask them to show some sort of documentation when you hear claims like that. First of all, consider if the guy is trying to sell something. No
matter what you are interested in, his rifles are always better. So take any claims like this with a grain of salt. There have been some rifles that have
gotten a bad rap over many years of this crap going on, like some Carcano's, Ross Straight pulls and the like.
One guy I saw frequently and we would talk milsurp rifles always insisted that the U.S. Model of 1917 was so inferior to the M1903 rifle and he would not have one if it was given to him. To him the M1903 was the very best rifle that ever saw combat, while he consistantly put down the M1917. About a year later after his last rant on this subject, we met up at the range, and he had a nice looking M1903, and guess what I had? Yep, a cherry Winchester M1917. So we did what only came natural and tried to outshoot the other. All I can say is that I am nowhere as good a shot as I used to be and I do not make any claims to that affect. But target after target, I consistantly beat him. Even as the day grew on and I was getting quite tired, my M1917 would still outshoot his M1903 when it came to grouping, and we were both using PS75 Korean ammo, so the ammo was not a consideration. After well over a hundred rounds fired by both of us, he finally admitted defeat with the words that said I must be lucky to have one of the very few M1917's that is a good shooter! The butt head would never admit to the truth and still rants about it. When I see him at gunshows about once a year, I loudly say to him about how my Enfield beat his Springfield when others are around listening to his rantings. So, in other words, simply ignore claims like this. Do a little research on your own and you will come away knowing the truth, not a bunch of gunshow lies. Curt |

Hey Noodlenut...
I hope we did not scare you off... but you can't drop a bomb like that here and not expect some return fire. (pardon the expression) As you can see, there is no shortage of great information on this forum (an opinion too)... There is much to learn here! (plus its a friendlier place than the gunboards site, but don't tell 'em I said that...) M.

Thanks to all who jump in here. I didn't think that this gun was a dud but was a little curuios. 65X55, no you did not scare me, there has been just
different ding-bats(the so called know-it-all's that I heard this stuff from) who think they know what they are talking about like the guy who own's a
gun shop here in town, if it doesn't cost $5,000.00 plus it's junk or just outright on good. NOTPC, hey, tell more about your 46 yugo, mine is just as
you said, with stock stamp, oil type stock, and the rear sight leaf in the white. Thanks again, noodlenut08

Run this by the Yugo forum. I think these Yugo marked M44 were for Calvary troops according to Branko (Yugo expert, he wrote the book)

This thread is interesting to me beause about 4 yrs ago I bought 2 of the above mentioned, plus a 91/59 at our local gunshop at about the same price. All are
pristine and with accesories. At the time I wondered whether they were new unused or refurbished, but because of the low price and the ammo they use, got them
anyway. You guys are great and I am thankful that these didn't get traded off. Keep up the good work!

you guys here seem to know your stuff.
i got two questions on my 1946 Izhevsk M44 . first one is does anyone know what these marks on front of stock could have been ? http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm61/eric-in-gilroy/2008_0612my0031.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm61/eric-in-gilroy/2008_0612my0030.jpg they look like plugged holes. second question is what does this circle with Y in it mean ? yugo? http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm61/eric-in-gilroy/2008_0612my0033.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm61/eric-in-gilroy/2008_0612my0032.jpg thanks guys |

I'm guessing, but the front of the stock might have been repaired.
The y in the circle seems to be a "Final black powder proof" marking. http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinMarks01.htm |
