They see the sightest movement and ranges vary from 20 yards to 200 yards. Here is what has happened so far: First trip, K31 KILLED me holding it on my leg for 4 hours. Saw a "bird" but knew a head shot at that distance not likely Second trip: used C & R Remington 870 "Wingmaster" (1950's make) but underestimated range and punished a tree. Also fired 3 shots at a running coyote....60+ yards again...that was fun. No blood trails seen anywhere. (Coyotes in season all year here). Today: brought Ruger PC 9 (9mm) carbine and it was a hit! Loved the compact profile and handling in the woods. Big hit with my friend. Unfortunately I yawned and a bird at 20 yards (should have had the shotgun!) putted its way off. Coming into a field we spied 3 deer....except one looked VERY FUNNY! Yep, big old Tom at about 120 yards +.....we dropped down and belly crawled through the grass as close as we could get....I heard him putting and went into action. UNFORTUNATELY I mistook the range again and although aimed high, basically "lobbed mortar rounds" at him. He didn't quite know what was up and I was able to put 5 rounds at him till he began to run. Let down of course, but pacing the distance let us know that it was WAY BEYOND the 75 yard "zero" I have practiced the Ruger at. Should have brought the K31! (Crawling through the grass was very fun and exciting though ). Tomorrow is likely my last day, so torn between A-5, Ruger, and K31. My friend is bringing a blind and a decoy......I am seriously considering carrying two of the three weapons and using them as the situation calls for. Wrong forum, but doubt many of us Turkey Hunt anyway and I am CERTAINTLY trying lots of milsurps here! GREG

Brought along K31 for the fields and A-5 for the blind. We even broke out the decoy. Saw some wild things but nothing called "turkeys". Learned a lot, had a great time, but also shot at more things than I ever have and still missed! Never fired so much and missed so many.....LOL I think I need to get an AR..... GREG

I know, I know "shotguns" are in order, but mine don't shoot that far and the 223 FMJ's would do fine. GREG I did try hard and wanted to use only my milsurps, which I did.

A friend of mine was a big nut when it came to turkey hunting. He literally spent thousands of dollars on his turkey hunting outfit, camo shotgun, camo clothing, turkey calls and such, and the whole ball of wax. He did get a tom several years ago and his wife cooked it up for Thanksgiving Dinner. He said it was like eating shoe leather, as it was so dry and tough. He said they had company over and were lucky to find a pizza joint open so they could all eat pizza instead of wild turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner. He threw the roasted carcass out to the dogs and they even would not eat it! He said it layed in his back yard for several days and finally one morning, in his headlights as he was leaving for work, he saw a coyote packing off the carcass. Curt

Dozens of wild turkeys have crossed my table, and with a few minor exceptions they are much better than store bought. I suspect they way the meat was handled and prepared is the problem.

I know you hear the same stories about venison. And with venison how the meat is cared for from the time the deer is dropped is very important. And to top it off, no two hunters seem to take care of the meat the same way. Personally, I have never eaten wild turkey, so I was just going on what this guy told me. We have quite a few wild turkeys around here in Northern Idaho now. When I was a kid, you only got to read about them in magazines and books. Just a month ago, while there was still snow berms along the highway, a flock of (what I counted) fourteen of them walked out into the road in front of me. I drive a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor that I bought from a local police department a couple years ago. If it weren't for that police interceptor suspension and quick steering response, I would have brought home turkey dinner for a large family for a long time! But I just can't get myself all fired up about hunting them. Curt

Need to work on our communication signals and I need to stop yawning! (No kidding!). I also would like a light weigh milsurp (hate commercial hunting guns EXCEPT C&R's..duh!) that is not too long. If funds improve, I'll get an AR 15 with an upper 16" barrel in .223 and another upper in 6.8 SPC for matches.....that one a heavier, longer barrel. How's that for a reason to build an AR???? GREG

My favorite way to prepare it is to cut the breast into strips, run through the cuber, double bread and fry...heavenly! the legs and thighs make a right tasty stew too! Somebody make some coffee!

I can't tell you how many times I would have a decent shot at one, even with my bow. They, of course, know you're not there for them and taunt you as the deer laugh from the wood line. Stupid wildlife. I hunt now because its personal. You can't beat time in the field, especially if you get to spend it with some of your favorite milsurps. Unfortunately, we can't do that in Ohio, unless you aim to kill Coyotes and even then, being in the field with a rifle probably isn't such a good idea, especially if something else is in season.
