I went to one of my usual candy stores and found a bubba camo'd 91/30. The paint covered the stock and some of the barrel and receiver. For $60.00 I found the bore to be bright and the serials matched on receiver, mag and buttplate. After takedown the metal showed no rusting anywhere. This rifle was taken care of...sort of.
Formby's finish remover was employed for the painted wood and acetone was used for the paint on the receiver. The Formby's action revealed a CCCP marked stock, with screw type sling slot escutcheons.
The acetone revealed a boxed SA on the barrel shank and a date of 1936. I was very happy to see that. It took the sting out of not being able to buy the 1927 camo'd 91/30 with the bolt knob marked Finn style matching the receiver. (drat). I should have gone ahead and made the purchase of both the prior weekend .....oh well.
There is some more action needed on the stock. While Formby's is great for wholesale removal of paint, my removal tool does not get into the finger groove or the dings and dents very well. A little more elbow grease and some steel wool action and this may be a looker!
You folks be careful out there!
