However, it looks to be scrubbed or refurbished, not well, but refurbished. Where one would normally find the identification on the receiver, it has been milled away, but one can still make out the last vestiges of lettering with a magnifying glass. Also on the wrist there is a new marking, M/470C which seems to be the mark of one of the BSA installations over some scrubbing marks. Why would this be? There are mismatched parts on the front sight, no serial on the barrel, or buttplate or most of the other locations one would normally find it. The only place that has matched serials is the rear side of the bolt handle and on the wrist. Was there a remanufacturing directive on old no. 4 Mk 1's to bring them into line with a newer standard? Thanks for any information! Often, markings are electropencilled onto the left receiver flat and all but disappear entirely under refinishing. Info on formal FTR programs is pretty scarce, and rifles were repaired/refurbed individually as needed as well. Hard to say for sure without seeing it, but your rifle sounds pretty typical.

Posts: 1600 (05/07/08 09:33 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Curtis: If I may add this - Indian ownership of a No.4 is often the source of the 'scrubbing' of identification; so much so that when I see a 'scrubbed' LE, I almost automatically assume previous Ishapore arsenal handling. I will guess that India saw scrubbing as a 'restarting' point for ownership identification - put all the rifles in a somewhat uniform category and simplified paperwork for inventory purposes.

There is an unusual marking that looks like an Indian Crown/Coat of Arms or some such. And a large * indicating that someone found rust in the barrel. But I think the thing was rebarreled. There is no rust.
