Westinghouse Value |

|
I was curious about the value of an average condition Westinghouse m91. It's advertised in our hometown trading journal for $150. I believe the
description said it was a 1915, but it may have been 1916. The paper isn't here so I'm going on memory. It said it was in good condition (yeah, I
know, could mean anything). As far as Mosins go, you can buy them cheaper all day long, but the Westinghouse arsenal grabbed my attention. I've got a
Soviet and a Finn, wouldn't mind another country as well. Thanks for any info.

Well $150 in my estimation would be a good buy. You should check and see if it has the Finn SA stamp, bore condition, matching serials, bayonet included, all
Westinghouse parts on it, not cut or sporterized, and the general overall condition. These are all points to check and or course you don't want to buy it
sight unseen at least I would not like to anyway. Go check it out, even with the cost of gas it would be worth a look to me. Good Luck! Bill

Sounds like a good price in reasonable condition. Any M-N collector should have a Westinghous.
Two years ago I paid $220 for a matching Westinghouse M91 with Tzars crest on the stock and SA stamped action in very good condition overall and excellent bore I considered it a great buy. |

I called on the piece today, and from the guy's description decided to go take a look. Ended up buying it. It's a 1915. Marked on receiver NEW
ENGLAND WESTINGHOUSE COMPANY 1915 T (I think it's a 'T', it may be a cyrillic) No. 257015, with matching bolt. Marked on side 'SA',
Finnish piece. There is some light pitting on the left side of the receiver and left side of the rear sight base. Bluing I'd rate at probably 70% to 80%.
I may change that estimate after I get this apart and cleaned up. Stock is very nice, Finnish swivels, a few light dings, typical Finn 2-Finger construction.
Hand guard is in good shape but mis-matched, some slight scratches and dings, all old. Cleaning rod is present, although does not appear to be of Finnish
construction. Butt plate is lightly rusty, but not bad, with an 'F' on the rear, and a Roman numeral 'III' on top, as well as an English
numeral '3', one marked above the top screw and one below. The rifle still retains a lot of cosomoline under the wood, you can see it seeping out.
Import marked very lightly on right side of barrel 'C.A.I. ST. ALB. VT.' and below that 'M91 USA 7.62X54R'. Fella was an ex-deputy sheriff of
Tazewell county, Va, and an ex-FFL. Said when he quit and turned in his license he had 176 guns he'd accumulated. Said he sold tons of M1, Carbines, and
the like. I paid him the full $150, figured it was worth it. Fella also said he has a ton of ammo, 7.62x54, 7.62x39, 30-06, .303, etc. I may end up
developing quite a business relationship with this dude. He said he'd give me a good bargain on some ammo. Thanks for all the replies, guys. I'll
try to get a photobucket account and post some photos of this old Westinghouse this weekend. I'm happy as a lark about this Mosin!

Well the missus decided to work on bills rather than watch some tv, so I played with my camera a bit. Photos aren't the greatest, but neither is the
photographer or camera! Anyway, here's some pics. Enjoy.

Wow! I think you did very well for $150! It looks like a Finn refurbed rifle and apparently restocked from the look of it. It was definitely stored and taken
pretty good care of after the Finns redid it. You take great pictures by the way! Now you have to get it taken apart and cleaned and looked at for the safety
aspect and then off to the range to really enjoy it. Congrats! I would have bought that in a heart beat! Bill

That is a decent deal on the rifle - Maybe you can get a decent deal on ammo from him as well - Take a look at AIM's prices on ammo to get an idea on what
ammo go's for nowadays =+)

Nice rifle. I just thought I'd mention, New England Westinghouse made M91's from 1915 till 1918, but all of them were stamped 1915.
Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for .... Will Rogers

Thank all of you for the additional information, it's been a big help. I'm glad I jumped on this one. It's not in as good of condition as my
other Mosins, but at least it is a good example of one of the scarcer types.
Plus I love Finns Now I need a M39. I think it's about the most attractive Mosin out of all the Mosin descendants, in my humble opinion. Pahtu, those are two fantastic looking N.E.W. receivers! Are they yours? Regards, Chris. |
