Bolt Bending? |
Lead | |
|
My M96 came with a bent bolt that looks professionally done, not just hammered over. I got it from a friend at work, who got it in the early 80's or so.
He says the others on the shelf were the same. I'm not so sure the dealer would have taken the time to bend them all this way for the price they were going
for back then? I've since been looking at others for sale, gunbroker, etc. and occasionally see others bent in a similar manner. The bend is tight to the
bolt and the flat areas/bevels folloe the bend over. Sorry, between camera's right now. I'm wondering if there wasn't a group of them bent during
retooling for service during WWII or if sent to another country like the M1903's were? All numbers match. The stock has been notched for the bend. Not
sure if it's Bubba or a Bubba 3rd world country that did it?

Samco advertised a few "bent bolt 96's" a few years ago. My take is that they were 96's with M41B sniper bolts???

They are not sniper bolts , just Swede civilian's bending them or Swede gunsmiths . Could also be done by a US importer in quantity , like Century Arms . I
doubt that SAMCO bent the bolts !!!!
I do not think you can bend a bolt handle over with a hammer without a lot of damage . Bending with a tourch and a heatsink to prevent damage to the metalurgy is about the only way to go . |

The century answer sounds about right from some of the other stuff I've heard about them, here. I was looking at it a lot closer and it looks like it may
have been cut or notched, bent over, then welded? I was just wondering if there was a "known" entity gov't or commercial, that did this to a
batch of them.

I got a 96/38 with a bent bolt back when the Swedes were selling for a $100. Picked it out because it was the only one he had in the bunch. It was nicely done,
so I figured the Swedes must have done it.

If the stock has a cut that the bolt fits down through it was done by Bubba. I can't say if it was a Swedish Bubba or from some other country's Bubba.
Chech out Dutchman's House of Karlina and you can see how the Swede's bent bolts. If yours doesn't look like what he has there then you can bet
Bubba was at work....Jim
