Israli K98 Mauser's RI1415-F Czech Manufactured K98 Mauser Rifle Cal. .308 (C&R Eligible) Fair Condition RI1416-F Belgium Manufactured K98 Mauser Rifle Cal. .308 (C&R Eligible) Fair Condition Were $ 159.87 each Now $ 139.87 each Was wondering if anyone got the ones in fair condition, what did they look like, and are they worth the Now $ 139.87 each ? Just curious!! Thinking bout getting one. the fabber39

I wonder if they are stamped 7.62 on the receivers and stocks. If so, that is a great price even if in poor to fair condition. Think I'll call them.

God knows where or how they received their dings, dents, rust or abuse, but it could be in a historic battle. Now if the weapon was a civilian model, or a military arm that saw limited, if any battle, then I wouldn't be interested. I do like great condition rifles, but the truth is they have either been restored, or sat in a rack somewhere for a long time with no history. I think an analogy is the war story of 2 guys who go to Viet Nam. One has an inside job in Saigon, while the other is a grunt in the field. The inside guy comes off the plane home in a nice uniform updated with the latest rank, service medals, etc, while the grunt comes out of the field, puts on his dress uniform that is in need of pressing and updating., and looks like a POW when he gets off the plane. Who has the stories? Just trying to explain why I don't look down on heavily used military weapons. I find them very interesting.

It's my own personal hang-up but a rifle with a sewer pipe for a barrel is better suited as a boat anchor, well at least to me. And it it was a mess. Bore wasn't bad, but there was a lot of corrosion under the wood. I doubt it was from any historic battle - most likely a damp storeroom in South America. Spent a lot of time cleaning it. Then to the range to find out it wouldn't extract. Returned it for credit. Life's too short for cheap guns and ugly women. I forgot my own advice to choose carefully. Subsequently found a minty Israeli (much more money, but I don't have to sneak around with an ugly rifle).

I also appreciate the history behind those dings and scrapes. I don't know that these rifles were in any great battles, but they were part of an interesting period of history, and many of them were used by "common Joes and Janes" to defend their lives and property. That's about as good as it gets to me. No fancy equipment, probably no great amount of training, but she's defending her own. Also, if it turns out they are too battered up to be of much use, then I don't mind trying some cleaning/refinishing experiments on them that I'd hate to try on a rifle in better shape, even if it's a Mosin-Nagant you could buy for half the price. They should be in early next week I'll let you know how they look, if you want. Xlerb.

The Czech K98 was quite dirty, but under the dirt was a descent rifle. Metal finish is 80% or better. No pitting. Stock has the usual couple of dings and scrapes. But mainly it was just dirty. Black with dirt. Bore certainly isn't new, but isn't that bad either and is bright and shiny. No frost or pitting. Shows around .002 wear at the muzzle. So that one is better than I expected. With some elbow grease and solvent it is a good rifle. The Belgian K98 isn't as good. Metal finish is, well, it's metal. The bluing is mostly gone from the receiver ring and surrounding areas. Other areas are better, call it 30%. No major pitting, but there is some fine pitting on the receiver ring and barrel. Looks more like a light pass with a glass beader. Stock is actually quite good. One dent, right where the bolt handle of a neighboring rifle would press into the stock, but that's it for big dents/dings. Stock profiles are "soft". Looks like this one saw a lot of handling. Bore is poor. .004 on the muzzle gauge - before cleaning. Haven't had a chance to clean it up yet, but the bore looks bright anyway and it still has clear rifling. So for $140 apiece they were a fair deal. If they were both like the Czech it would be a good deal. I've seen similar Israelis sell for more money. Allan's Armoury just had a set of Israeli mausers that were, I would guess, in about the same condition as my Czech rifle once it was cleaned up a bit (maybe a little better) and they sold instantly for $250-295.
