Front Sight Adjustment |
Lead | |
|
I have an Enfield No. 4 MK 1 from 1943 that has good groupings, but it fires to the right. The gun has seen some wear and the left side of the front sight
guard is a little bent in, like it was hit against something hard at one time.Regardless, I think my front sight is off a bit and is causing my problem. I was
wondering if its possible to adjust the front sight in anyway to get it centered and how can it be done.

Look for a odd looking screw head on the face of the front sight base.
Its not a normal screwhead with a slot, its the opposite, theres a bar across the head which is turned with a wrench that resembles the little wrench used to remove the valve from an innertube. Not all No.4 rifles have this, My Savage has it, but I've seen British rifles that don't and I think some Savages have it and some don't. The screw itself runs through the base which has a cut from the bottom of the dovetail to the hole that the screw that holds sight protector ears in place runs through. The sight base acts like a clamp. You can loosen the screw and move the sight blade fairly easily. If the screw is torqued down tight trying to drive the blade over can warp the sightbase. I tried that when I couldn't get the screw loose even with a wrench that fit. Its very easy to break these small dia screws if you don't have the proper wrench. Mine finally broke and I had to drill it out, tap the hole, and substitute a 4x40 allen head. PS The front sight base can't be turned on the barrel by a blow, it fits over thick steel lugs that are integral to the barrel. If a barrel isn't clocked in properly it can be off. Also some rearsights have a shim on one side, if the shim has been installed on the wrong side that will throw it off by a wide margin. |

The front sight works just the opposite of the rear sight. If your rifle shoots to the right you have to move the front sight to the right. Will
