This is a great website-! Forgive me if this has been covered, but: why was a "short" cleaning rod provided-? Of what use is it-? And, more importantly...where can i find one-? Unfortunately, I bought a standard "long" version at a gun show today, and was quite puzzled when the thing only went in a couple of inches. Examination with a small light revealed a threaded part and no further boring into the stock. I know that certain Mauser rods can be ganged up to make a longer, communal rod to be shared by several soldiers. Is this the same deal-? Any help would be appreciated-- Thanx--Buzz

It seemed to be the really short rod (maybe 5.5") I described. Thanks for everyone's (anyone's) kind interest. --Buzz

I have a 99 with a similar short cleaning rod for that reason.

It hadn't occurred to me that my Type 99* may have suffered the same indignity. I don't think it did: if I insert this long rod into the channel about 5 inches, it screws in easily, suggesting a stacking rod type. And I'm reasonably sure the stock is intact beneath the sling swivel band. Great. Spent my beer money on a gorgeous full-length rod I can't use. Wait: the obvious solution----get another Arisaka-! Ive got an all matching almost mint T99 just missing this little bugger. Ive seen them now and again but most of the time they go for nearly a third to half of what I paid for the rifle Im almost to the point of having someone make one on a lathe or cutting down a longer less expensive repop if there are any and rethreading the end.

I saw some on Gunbroker, and I think I saw some on ebay. Can run form $15-25.00. Just make sure you get a screw-in type, and not a pointed drive-in type for training rifles. Since you have the other rod already, I would keep it, and find a rifle to fit it. M.P.

Inserted it into the hole and after three inches, it stopped. blocked. I had to disassemble the rifle where I could look into the hole. On my stock, once the barrel is removed, about half way, there is a slot where you can see the cleaning rod. Well, it had something in it but was blocked. finally I used an ice pick and was able to push through about an inch of dirt until the channel was clear. The foreign object fell out (unknown object) and my cleaning rod slipped in nice and sweet. Now everything is great!
