Anybody tie your own flies? |

I do! Mostly easy stuff like wooly buggers, clouser minnows, the little clouser kits, sponge buggs, san wan worms, a couple little easy nymphs.. I have a
decent vise (montana Mongoose). M y flies don't look all that great as compared to an expert, but the fish don't seem to mind!

I agree about fishing more often, I've tried to tie my own jigs before, but not flies.

I tie my own, mostly simple stuff for pan fish. Learning to tie was something I, my wife and our kids learned together by going to Bass Pro Shop for informal
'classes' and trial and error. Rozeann and the boys also learned a bit more latter on from summer camp Boy Scouting. It's been years since we sat
down to tie together and I only pull a vice out once in a blue moon, but maybe I'll get a chance to share with grandkids some day expand my skills with a
bobbin and deer hair. And yes I also need to fish more often as well; it's been about a year since I've cast a fly. Cheers

A friend of my dad's taught me years ago. I did fresh water flies then. My son got interested so I got him started, but he did saltwater flies. He caught
Redfish and sea trout with them. I still have his rod and I think some of his flies are still here. I will have to see if they still work.

Morning,
Been tying for quite awhile myself, for trout, salmon, steelhead fishing. Also been tying full dressed, classic, salmon flies for display, for a couple of years now. I do some rod building too. The Pine River in Michigan is right down the road. ALso like to the the Pere Marquette, Betsy and a couple others within an hour of me. For anybody that wants to hone your skills on-line. I also belong to flytyingforum.com. There are some nice video and photo tutorials on there. Pretty family oriented sight. Don |

you really can't FF without tying your own junk.
that's half...more than half the fun of doing it. i have a box full of stuff i did just to see if it would work...most of it has'nt, but that's not the point. it's been years since i messed around with trout, but smallmouth and panfish have my full attention. |

Where I live commercial flies just aren't readily available, besides a guy can tie flies that no one mass produces. It's not often one sees classic
wet fly patterns from the early 1900s for sale. Sure you may find a partridge and orange but it won't be tied with silk like it should be for the color to
be right when it gets wet. If you haven't already check out Ray Bergman's "Trout" it has a good listing of flies used in the 20s and
thirties with color plates and patterns.

http://www.classicflytying.com/ I haven't gotten into the calssic wets just yet or streamers. I'm too addicted to the classic salmon flies. |

I had not found that site yet, thanks. Classic salmon flies are something, maybe someday I'll try one or two. They take a lot of skills I haven't
learned yet.

I'd like to learn how to tie but I don't know anyone around here that knows how. I'm not exactly in the middle of fly fishing country but it's
all I fish with. With some of the ponds around here you really don't know what you'll catch sometimes. I have permission to fish the lakes at a local
golf course that the owner stocked with bream, bass and catfish and I've caught them all with wolly buggers. I was going for small bass or bream one day
and started catching catfish! I'd never heard of anyone catching catfish with any artificle bait before and I had taken my No. 4 rod and light tippet. The
first 2 broke the line but I played the 3rd for 45 minutes! I didn't take my net so it was hard to get him all the way in.
I buy all my flies on Ebay. It's the cheapest way but still would like to learn how to tie my own. |

I have been tying flies for over 20 years . . . however I recently discovered that I can buy them cheaper than I can make them. I save hours of time and some
Paki or Indian kid makes a couple dollars. It's win-win for both of us.
