Deer Hunting, M1 Garand |
Lead | |
|
I hunt opening day with a BAR .30/06 equipped with a 3X7 'scope. This year a very close friend who had a leg injury asked me if I would be interested in
helping his Son's on "Drives" as he still has a tough time getting around. I decided to use one of my M-1 Garands as a "Driving" gun.
I bough regular velocity Remington 150 Grain ammunition, since I read the 180 grain I use in my Browning will damage the operating rod. Is this true? Also,
is this a wise choice for Deer hunting? I welcome any opinions. Thanks

There is a discussion going on the CMP website about this it is starting to turn into a p!ssing match but it will give you some good info if you read past the
whiners. The main thing is Nornady makes a hunting ammo especially for the M1 rifle.

What part of "shall not be infringed" don't you understand? Joel 3:9-10

Forgive this desert dweller.
What's a 'drive'? Cattle? If so, that's too cool. I hope your friend is well soon. |

Using the Garand as a "driving" gun...
If "driving" cattle, might I recommend a moderately powered air rifle? Popping even the biggest bull with a .30-06, is likely to stop him from going very far...

I thought the gun might be used to protect the cattle from coyotes, cougars, etc. but like I said, I live in a desert. I could use it to stop tumbleweed in
it's tracks.

Are you referring to driving deer? If so, it might be kind of heavy unless you're the one in the blind.

Sounds funny to us out here in the West, but back East it is still common to use one group of hunters to "push" deer or other game animals toward
others who are on stands. Not unlike the bird hunts in Scotland, and really much the same as pushing pheasant with a line of hunters toward an irrigation
ditch until they launch.

Not risky at all, ask Dick Cheney.

I'm told they hunt bear that way sometimes, too. Can't recall if that was Pennsylvania or Maine, though.

This year I am using "TW" military head stamped once fired cases, CCI Primers, 150 Grain Remington Bronze Points, and 48.3 grains of IMR 4064 for my
M-1 hunting loads. It is the same load that I use when I shoot Winchester 147 grain FMJ projectiles through my rifle, in fact, the Remington Bronze Points have
almost the same look and feel.

Actually, in California, in the coastal range of mountains, it is, or at least was, very common to have deer drives. The manzanita brush can be very thick,
providing excellent hiding for deer. Some hunters would get on a stand, overlooking a portion of terrain, while a group of other hunters would go through the
brush hoping to drive the deer out ahead of them, offering an opportunity for those on a stand to get a shot. Similar methods are used in other western states.
