Has anyone tried Hornady's 90gn .308 XTP hollow points |

in an M1 carbine? Should be able to get 2300-2400fps with them.

The problem is that the XTP's are handgun bullets, designed for velocities in the 1200 to 1600 fps range.
The bullet would likely just fly apart at the velocities you are talking about. There plenty of 85 to 100 grain FMJ .308 diameter bullets to play with, that would be much more suitable for 2000 to 2500 fps. Gregg |

Can you point me in the direction of some 85-86gn FMJ's?
I am ordering a box of these for home defense rounds. This is the same bullet that Cor-Bon used in their 100gn DPX rounds.

Hornady makes an 86 gr RN SP rifle bullet. I don't know their P/N, but the Midway order # is 142-182. HTH

I put some in 7.62x39 and they worked. 30 carbine should be much less stressful on them.

XTPs in .30 Carbine | ||
|
I use the .309" 90 gr XTPs in my .30 Carbine. 23-2400 fps is a little over the top though. I get 2100 with a max load but am not comfortable with it as
it is really beating up the little M1 Carbine. I prefer a load right at 2000 fps. I use H110 and suggest you start at 15 gr and work up in .3 gr increments
until you hit 2000 fps. At 2000 fps accuracy is excellent (the slow twist of the .30 carbine does not create enough RPM to cause the bullets to come apart)
and the destructiveness on rabbits is awesome. I call then "'bits" as a bit of 'em goes here and a 'bit of 'em goes there! The XTPs
also feed and function without a hitch. Might be the best bullet going for home defense purposes if one uses a M1 Carbine for that. The Hornady .30 Mauser
.308 86 gr SP/RN is another "sleeper" bullet for the .30 M1 Carbine.

I used those bullets in my broomhandle and in several 7.62x25 guns. They wouldn't feed very well becasue of the shape of the nose. Loading them into the
chamber one at a time worked, and they shot ok. Not great, but not horribly either.

I have a box of the XTP's coming from MidwayUSA so I will be trying them shortly.
Larry, have you used the Lee factory crimp die for .30 carbine?

No I don't use the Lee factory crimp die as the .30 carbine headspaces on the case mouth. I use the Lee die that puts the taper crimp on the case. It might be called a factory crimp die though. I've had it for a long time and don't remember....CRAFT I guess .

The XTP's look good, I am going to load up some dummies this weekend to test both the feeding and the factory crimp.
I am off work from Wed thru Sunday next week so I plan on camping out at River Bend and get in some serious range time.

I made up some dummy rounds with the XTP's last night and as I was afraid of, I had feeding issues, especially from the left side of the magazine.
I tried Inland and Quality Hardware 15 round GI mags that feed ball ammo flawlessly and even tried a 30 round unmarked mag that has had no problems with ball. My carbine is a '43 Inland with a Saginaw marked receiver. I tried from as long as would fit in the mag to as short as I could seat them without looking like 7.62 Nagant rounds but the flat point seems to be catching on the bottom of the feed ramp. Some times I could get all three to feed smoothly but mostly the ones on the left side would hang and the tips got progressivly more chewed up. I guess I could alternate them with ball rounds on the left side of the mag but that doesn't sound very practicle. I am reluctant to monkey with any of my USGI mags but I do have a 10 round commercial mag that I might try some feed lip adjustments on.
