BUT....another 30.30 I have (Winchester also) ALSO closes on a no-go and I'm pretty sure it's never been fired.......are 94's just "loose"? My Marlin 30.30 DOESN'T close on the no-go.........just wish it had a side-mounted scope! GREG

We've never checked headspace, but the primers show signs of excessive headspace by backing out with normal loads. I know if loads are too light, this can also cause the primers to back out. I don't think it does it with factory loads, only normal (as per manual) reloads do it. This gun was bought new, and hasn't had many rounds through it, so we figured it was made with tolerances on the loose side. I agree with mountain doctor, since the working pressures are only specified as 38,000cup maximum, and since it headspaces on the rim, it's probably not a problem. Just stick to factory loads, or normal handloads, and it should be fine. BTW, have you ever fired this rifle? If so, what do the cases look like? Tmygun

I borrowed a headspace gauge and the bolt closed on the no-go gauge. The only consequence to me is that it just stretches the brass a bit to fit the chamber upon firing. If you full lenth resize back to factory specs over and over you will probably get a case head separation but since I shoot primarily CMP stuff now and don't reload it I don't worry about it. So if you are shooting new factory loads I wouldn't worry about it. And if you are shooting handloads don't size them all the way back to factory specs. Just adjust the die to slightly size them and you should be good to go. I think a lot of people obsess about headspace issues when it's really not that big a deal, to me at least. Posts: 1981 (10/16/08 05:20 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Well it seems that both WRAC and Olin don't think it's much of a problem as after readign this several 94's have this "problem" including hardly used ones and from personal experience Winchester cases are undersize to specs in the head department and rim. Both the 30-30 win and 303 cases I have are undersize. I also think far to much is made of head space and have never had any problems caused by it really. Best Regards. A field guage is .003 in. longer than a no-go. If it closes on 1 piece of tape on the base of the no-go guage and feels squishy (you can force it closed) with 2 pieces it's OK. And if you shoot it, check the inside of the empties for an annular gulley just in front of the base. Gulley - headspace is excessive and its trying to pull the case in 2. No gulley - it's OK regardless of what the guage says. 30-30 pressures, plus the rim, make any headspace dangers minimal.

Then your once fired brass is perfectly headspaced for the chamber. If you are super paranoid and reload, neck the brass up then down and set a false shoulder in virgin brass. Again, after firing it, don't set the shoulder back. Let's see, how do folks make 30-30 improved brass, oh, they fire 30-30 factory loads in the new chamber,... In a nutshell, I'd quit worrying about it.
