LIkely the Yugo 1970's (but hard to find). Ammoman.com might still have it on belts....
www.ammoman.com Yugo 1950's is said to be OK...with lots of double strikes. SOG, Century, etc. Romanian 8mm is a bargain, but only with 4" groups at 100 yards. www.aimsurplus.com Good Luck! GREG |

.....The Portuguese surplus 8mm on stripper clips from Samcoglobal.com is by far and bar none the best and most accurate ammo ever made....a little pricey but accurate beyond belief.....as accurate as my most perfect handloads in a swedish mauser.......

Currently available 8mm Milsurp. I would agree the stuff from SAMCO. However, I would disagree on the "best 8mm Milsurp ever". The German sS is from my experience the most accurate at long ranges. P634 code and P204 from 1940 in particular. Since it is not available, it is a mute point. We did extensive tests.
SAMCO's 8mm is expensive. If the Yugo from the 1970s or newer ever comes in. It is the best buy for the money and as accurate and consistant as the FN from SAMCO. When and if it does come in, you will for sure hear about it and the feeding frenzy. Very much in demand. The Yugo from the fifties is VERY inconsistant. Some is accurate and some, not so accurate. Not reliable enough for target shooting. Plinking ammo only. Romanian is light ball, 150 grain with a light powder load. Not good for most Mausers. Good for plinking only from my experience. For the price of SAMCO's ammo, you can get very good commercial ammo. Handloading is cheaper at the moment. Just my .02 |

Seems like I heard of that before. I personally haven't seen any steel cased Yugo 8mm.
All the newer Yugo 8mm ammo from the seventies, eighties, and nineties, has all looked almost exactly alike with brass cases and very new looking, shiny. Without exception, it is all very accurate, consistant, sure fire stuff. I'm not sure, but I think there was a post on Gunboards about the steel cases Yugo ammo. |

Hello, I bought a case of the steel case yugo 8mm at a recent gun show. It is 81 dated and has the same markings as the 77 dated brass case. I have not fired any of it yet....

I've fired the 80's steel cased stuff. It seems to be accurate as the 70's except it caused the bolt to be stiff opening, I don't get that with the Romo steel cased, but with the Yugo steel cased it happened, seems to be good stuff other than that.

Re: 80s yugo ammo | ||

The Yugo seventies and newer will print a cloverleaf, all holes touching at 100 yds. with the scoped Mauser snipers and some of the Mausers with iron sights.
Will the 80s steel cased ammo do that? Yugo from the fifities has some lots that will do that,but it usually shoots groups quite a bit larger than the newer, with flyers. I'm curious about the Yugo steel cases 80s stuff coming in. I hope someone will have some for sale at out gun show in Las Vegs this week end. I'm now looking for 8mm surplus that is on par with the Yugo seventies and newer. We need something reliable and consistant for paper shooting. None of the other 8mm available is good enough for that. Turk Romanian Greek Equadorian Yugo 50s |

I was able to fire a few rounds this weekend and had the same results as cosmo05 mentioned above. The steel case '81 yugo caused the bolt on my yugo 24/47 to be a little stiff to open, no split cases, just a little hard to open the bolt. I will try it in some of my other rifles and see if it causes the same thing. I have never had this happen with the Romanian. Other than that it looks like good ammo. I have some '56 Yugo and so far my 24/47 and my 98/48 like that the best as far as accuracy. I also have some '77 Yugo but I have not tested it yet, I'm trying to conserve it.

Your not the only one conserving the seventies or newer Yugo 8mm.
I and others use it exclusively for baseline ammon now. That means it is only shot if there is a problem with POI on a rifle. To illiminate the ammo factor, we just shoot some seventies Yugo and then it becomes apparant if there is a problem with the rifle or scope mount or scope. I still shoot some of it out of my snipers, but have done so more sparingly. We are all hoping some more will come in. On a side note. The fifites Yugo has increased in price at all of the dealers except Century. Ammoman is now charging about $139 shipped per case. If the steel cases Yugo is very accurate, the sticky bolt can be overlooked. Just need to ream the chamber with brush and laquer thinner, like the Mosins. I'm expecting to find some steel cased Yugo at the gun show this week end here in L.V. |

Sticky bolt is a common thing when using steel cased ammo originaly intended for machine guns! Yugoslav MG M-57 has a roller lock which is not prone to
sticking with whatever ammo you feed it.
I belive you are reffering to black laquered cases headstamped with date of manufacture and a "ч" which stands for "челична чаура" (steel case)... To the best of my knowledge, those cases are not as flexible as the brass ones and don't return to their original dimensions after firing, thus wedging the bolt in its locked position... The remedy would be to lightly oil each case shoulder. Even then, don't expect miracles, as the bolt handle would stick most of the time! One caveat here... Steel cased Yugo ammo is known to have some bullet to case sealing issues! I have observed numerous cases, immediately after firing, that have been heavily rusted on the inside! My guess is that powder, being hygroscopic as it is, draws moisture in which induces corroding of the cases... |

Runs fine in the Hakim, FN-49, G-43 (with gas kit), and the various Mausers. Seems to be quite accurate too. My Persian does sub-2" groups with it.
