model 1908 mauser | ||
|
i bought a 1908 brazilian while living in canada in 1978. it is in new condition with all parts serialized and matching. it came with a matching test target dated august 13, 1913. it's a great shooter and it cost me $139.99 canadian back then. it has one small blemish in the bluing on the barrel and a small notch rusted in the "Solingen" knife bayonette from a lack of cosmoline when stored prior to my purchasing it. it's an Oberndorf mauser #7975 and it also has the letter B stamped in various places on the stock as well as on metal parts.

I tried to access your 1908 Survey website, however I got an Error message indicating the site was invalid. Do you want me to post the information direct to this list, or is there another active website for the survey?

I just picked up a like new 1908 in a pawn shop. All #'s match.
SN beta 2609 circle B, with a d under it. It is really nice. Are you compiling a build date list? |

Coming back to this Survey after a long absence.
A month ago I picked up about a dozen M1908 barrels ( stripped out) and amongst the usual "Normal" First contract single suffix Numbers, were some of the early double letter suffix numbers (Aa, Kk, etc,) as well as the latest in my experience: "Uu" I have posted this report directly to the SA Mausers Board,(Parallax) and also on Gunboards, with little response. Anybody come across a"Vv" or "Ww" or later doublke letter suffix? DWM used both a Roman letter and occasionaly a Gothic or Greek script letter to indicate the particular national contract of a Rifle. Thus the Portuguese Vergueiro M1904s have a stylised "P" on both barrel and receiver, whilst the brazilian rifles have both a Greek "B" (Beta) and a Roman "B" on the barrel and receiver. These letters hyave Nothing to do with the serial Numbers. As to the Uruguayan Rifles, they are a very small order and are simply7 a "rebadge" of the on-going Brazilian Contract ( Worn Uruguayan M1908s are usually mistaken for Brazilian rifles due to the similarity of factory markings ("B" markings and use of Greek letter inspection markings) I have not fully examined an Argentine rifle to determine whether there is an "A" somewhere on barrel or receiver to distinguish the Argentinian DWM made rifles (M1909) Regards, Doc AV AV ballistics |

Adding my 1908 Brazilian to the list. This thing is beautiful. Picked it up at a local mom & pop gunstore. Completely matching down to the cleaning rod. Very small import stamp on the bottom side of the barrel. Here is a tease picture with the serial#:
![]() Some guy brought it in to sell. Story goes, it was dad's rifle and he was a very picky collector. Dad passed away and the son just wanted to get rid of it. Enjoy. KG |

I thought I'd add infor. from my 1908.
Sn looks like this: B 8988 (then a circled B) Bb No importer markings. I bought this at a auction earlier this year. Bubba had had his way with it, so it was essentially a barrelled action. Everything that is there is matching. Bore is good. Finish on the metal is also good. Springfield Sporters has been a great source for affordable parts to put this gun back together. |

Re: 1908 Brazilian Survey | ||

Doc AV: I've looked at a lot of Brazilian '08 rifles and never saw anything past Uu. But recently I sorted through a batch of '08 barrels from Century (bought several years ago), I saw a barrel about midway through through the Vv range. It went in the scrap (like about 25%) because of the bore, but external condition and markings were good. So at least 5000 Vv were made. JL

Brazillian mauser | ||

Hi:
Brand "NEW" member here, Just thought I'd ad my 1908 Brazillian to the mix. Purchased from Springfield Armory, Geneseo, Il on 8/24/87 for $144.00 + $6.50 shipping (Had an 01 FFL at the time) Rifle is serial number 3788 Mfg, by Deutsche waffen-Und Munitionsfabriken. Berlin barrel replaced with an FN 23 1/2" 1n 308 cal Stock shortened to fit barrel completely re-parkerized Stock sanded and oil finished every pierce of the rifle is stamped with 3788, or just 88, along with a Greek epsilon and a bomb symbol. The serial number on the ring has a Greek Beta followed by the S/N followed by the Brazillian "B" in a circle. The stock has the Brazillian 5 pointed star just behind the stock reenforcement and a circled B on the heel, as well as the S/N just behind the rear sling swivel. It'll keep 147Gr. 308's in under 2" if I do my part. Arnaki |
