"Real" 91/30 PU Sniper? |
Lead | |||||||||
|
Thought I'd check with the experts on the autheticity of this 91/30 PU sniper. Does it look a re-arsenal rifle or one cobbled together by an importer?
Thanks for the help.

I'd guess one of the recently imported snipers with postwar PU scopes and a manufactured bolt handle from the pics. I had a real one and don't remember
my bolt handle being bent to the rear slightly as that one appears to be. But it's hard to tell and I sold mine years ago.

Genuine? | ||||||||||

I'm no expert, but there are several things that suggest it's not genuine.
Price Swept Bolt Flat (not rounded) Heads on Turrent Screws Pristine Scope Condition (and apparently no rebuild mark/date) Location of Scope Manufacturer Mark/Serial Number - on the several I own the serial number is lines up with the top turret. Your sample seems to have the serial number closer to the imaginary line between the two turrets. See below: |

Any PU scope with an "N4-" serial number is a current Ukrainian reproduction scope as that serial number prefix was not used in WW2 (I.O. Inc.
currently sells the scope package for $250-300). This reproduction scope is the best reproduction scope on the market and true to the original. The rifle is
a reproduction and the price is in the ballpark for one. BTW, not all original PU scopes were rebuilt or have a rebuild mark.

All good info folks - many thanks. I've asked the seller if the rifle shoots POA/POI and if it groups well with the reticle centered. If so, I'll ask
to have a look-see as we're both local here in NH for a FTF sale. I'm hoping to take that first step on the Mosin-Nagant afficinado trail. That C&R
may come in handy!!

Given the fact that this is a repro, you might want to look at some of the others that are out there.
I.O. Inc. has them at 399 (below). Cole Distributing usually has them at that price, but they are currently out of stock. I'd rather spend $400 than $475 The difference buys a few hundred
rounds of ammo!
cktad correctly pointed out that original PU scopes haven't automatically been rebult, or carry rebuild marks. However the likelihood of coming across on in pristine condition, as the one on the rifle H Mode is selling is extremely remote. It's just one more factor that tends to undermine the possibility of this being original. The cincher, as far as I'm concern, is cktad's observation that the scope is incorrectly numbered for a genuine PU. Whatever you do, I hope you have as much fun as I've had with mine! If you have a C&R it could still cost you $425-450 and you get luck of the draw. If you can hold the other rifle in your hands and inspect it, it might be worth the small amount of extra money. |

Mosin sniper $1295.00 and the "accessory kit" only $295.00. Wow, I'm gonna rush out and buy a few.
And of course we know with Mitchell that it's all 100% geniune - probably used by Stalin himself. |

$1295,but look at all the history.I'm sure Mitchell's scavengers searched the world to find these fine examples of the Russian rifle building industry.
of course I'm kidding. just boggles my mind that folks look at some of MM's stuff,looks brand new,and they never question where these pristine weapons
have been stored for the last 100+ years.you would think someone else would stumble on one or two of them. jwr
